The Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden is the oldest zoo in Hungary and one of the oldest in the world. It has 1,072 animal species and is located within the City Park of Budapest, in the centre of the city, unusually for a zoo. The zoo opened its doors on 9 August 1866. The park has 1–1.1 million visitors every year.

The Budapest Zoo is the oldest and largest zoo in Hungary. It was the only one of its kind in the country from its opening in 1866 until the 1950s, when the first rural zoos were established. It is located in the 14th district of Budapest, in Városliget, and has been a nature reserve since 1986. Location and area of the Budapest Zoo The zoo covers an area of 10.7 hectares at the west end of the City Park. In its immediate vicinity are the Amusement Park, the Budapest Circus, the Gundel Restaurant and the Bagolyvár Restaurant, as well as the Museum of Fine Arts. Part of the Zoo has been carved out of the Zoo for part of the Amusement Park, but the area of the Budapest Circus and the two neighbouring restaurants were once part of the Zoo. What's more, the Széchenyi Baths area was originally reserved for the later expansion of the garden. As a result of the land reclamations, by 1912 only 11 hectares of the original 18 hectares had been left. Zoological collection The Zoo exhibits around 5,000 specimens of 733 animal species. Its species composition provides a broad overview of the diversity of life on Earth. The collection includes animals from every continent, from the most popular mammals and birds in zoos to reptiles, amphibians, fish and a rich collection of invertebrates.

I wouldn’t recommend this zoo at all. First of all I have a lot of concerns about the animals. The animals live in poor conditions. They have small cages/enclosures and it’s all very dirty. Some of the animals are separated or completely alone, even the ones that normally live in groups. If you were lucky enough to see two animals, it was usually mother and child. The animals that are grouped have way too little space and live very crowded. A couple animals don’t even have water because the pools are dried out and they didn’t even bother to fix it. Same deal with some of the vegetation in the enclosures: sometimes there just wasn’t any. We even saw injured animals like a mouse missing an entire ear and with a very infected tail. It is no surprise that the animals that live there show agressive behaviour towards the visitors. The enclosures are also poorly divided, for example you had the African and the Asian elephants next to each other in separate enclosures and the African elephant only had space inside and none outside, the Asian elephants only had space outside and none inside. I feel very sorry for the animals. And if this isn’t enough to convince you not to visit this zoo, here you have a couple more reasons. The zoo seems very big but half of it are empty cages or enclosures where they put an ‘under construction’ sign. It’s not tourist friendly at all because all the signs are in Hungarian and the directions are very unclear. The gardens aren’t that impressive anyway. The only thing I enjoyed was the petting zoo, but even then I felt bad because they seemed so sad.

In part a nice small zoo with old character. The smaller animals seemed happy enough. But we left very depressed about the sad state of some of the larger animals. Three separated lions who were clearly very distressed, with one lioness obsessively and maniacally walking in the same circles all by herself. She even carved out a route on the ground. High sign of distress, it seemed. Another lion roaring and constantly looking for a way out. Then there was one sole polar bear, looking unhealthy and very distressed and alone. Also walking obsessively in exactly the same patterns. Three rhinos were in separate small enclosures, with one constantly obsessively making holes in the ground. Also looked depressed and bored. All had small enclosures and we deemed it animal abuse to be honest. In western Europe this would NEVER be allowed or seen in a zoo. And then there was one lonely tiger, all by himself, who seemed so depressed and bored that he hid and slept all the time. Really, how can this happen and be allowed in Europe? I will have to make a report with Four Paws or other organizations. It ruined my stay in Budapest, as I cannot stop thinking about the sad lives these animals lead.

One of the biggest zoos in European capital metropolitan areas. The zoo is easily accessible via public transport with a bus stop right outside the main enterance. The zoo houses a variety of species from all around the world with the African and Asian sections being the most loved and sought after by kids and adults alike.Upon passing the main enterance, just take the path on your right and you will start with the gorilla enclosure, this is where the African section starts followed by the Asian section. Although the zoo opens at 09:00 but indoor enclosures, where animals are kept furing hot summer days do not open their doors for visitors before 10:00. The petting zoo holds a number of ewes and pigmy goats, yet unlike other zoos, food dispensers where you can buy dry food for the petting zoo animals are unavailable. The zoo is one star short of a 5-star rating mainly due to its enclosures. Some are not big enough for the animals and not providing adequate shade, or being a bit away from the fence, and thus making it a bit difficult to spot the animals within.

Was a lovely zoo. Some of the enclosures were questionable by way of size in comparison to zoo standards where I am from but the animals seemed well looked after and I loved that they paired animals that would naturally be found together in the wild too. Highlight was getting up close to the Rhea's. They had lots of little exhibits where you could handle animals coats, insect specimens, bones, snake skin etc which was quite nice. I also like the Japanese garden was nice and the terrapins and fish in the pond were lovely to watch as you strolled along the walkway. I particularly liked that they had a section on neanderthal/ancient humans, was a nice touch and something different that's usually confined to a section of a museum, but being able to walk into an ancient 'cave' and learn about our ancestors at the zoo was fantastic The signs that were in both English and Hungarian were great but unfortunately not consistent. The only reason it isn't a 5* is because I felt some enclosures were a little on the small side for the animals.
