St. Francis Xavier's Church (புனித ஃபிரான்சிஸ் ஜேவியர் தேவாலயம்/Gereja Santo Fransiskus Xaverius) (1852) — Attraction in George Town

It's approximately 130 years old, built by one of the missionary priests who developed the grounds for the very poor in the district. It used to house a small Indian village, alongside the St Joseph's Orphanage. In the early 2000s, the Indian village was resettled and the historic strap homes demolished.

In its place, The Lighthouse was created to feed the hard core poor who still live in the area.

Till today, The Lighthouse provides free tea and dinner to all who comes to its doors between 4p to 7pm, Mondays to Fridays, by just signing in at the entrance. The Lighthouse today has expanded to The Light Bakery and Laundry services to help the poor...

One of few that still hold mass on Sunday evenings at 6pm post pandemic. Sadly a church is only as hospitable as its congregation. The lay worker giving out Communion wafer is a very rude racist Indian old man who should be chastised for his arrogance. The Chinese priest is struggling with this remnants of an Indian village. The singing is poorly coordinated with wrong Powerpoint slides and missing choirmaster. Thankfully God is all merciful and forgiving to these peasants who deserve purgatory. A normal catholic mass although it ended pretty quickly- 40 minutes instead of your usual 1 hour. Whilst in a pandemic, very grateful that mass is still being held (sunday evenings 6pm) and catering to public while strictly adhering to sop. Choir music was alright, i enjoyed it as I knew the songs and gotta admire the talented keyboardist (idk his name but i attended the mass on 13.2.22) who held the choir together. Also, there's no AC so be prepared to be perspiring. However, i didnt feel the warmth of the congregation as everyone was either rushing elsewhere or talking to other members.
