Stopped by this lovely church Saint Catherine of Italy aka Knisja Santa Katerina tal-Italja. It was originally built in 1576 by Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar. The current Baroque façade and porch were added during a major transformation in 1713 by Italian architect Romano Carapecchia. The church serves as the parish church for the Italian community in Malta. It is adjoined to the Auberge d'Italie, which was the headquarters of the Italian Knights of the Order of St. John.

A beautiful example of Baroque architecture nestled in the heart of Valletta. Built by the Italian Knights of St John in the 16th century and later enlarged, the church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The circular plan and richly decorated interior, including Mattia Preti’s dome painting, create a serene and elegant atmosphere. Modest in size but rich in charm and history. Definitely recommend 👌🏼.

While the church looks beautiful from the outside, seeing the ceiling while inside is equally just as impressive. The way it was been restored (as recent as 2011) is quite impressive. Grab one of the guidebooks on the side shelf once you enter… it will show you the restoration process — before and after photos. It will heighten one’s appreciation for this place! Good historical landmark!
