The tour guide was great, the underground areas themselves were actually really interesting, because you can imagine what it must've been like for the people who had to shelter there, but it was too short. Its 1 hr, but the first 15 mins are spent on introduction/getting prepared/getting there which is fine, but the last 15 mins we were shown a film which was quite poorly made as well and honestly, I think that was the worst part of the tour.
Better maintenance and some more histroical anecdotes would've been nicer. And the film they show in the end should definitely be removed as it felt quite useless with the actors play-acting as people during the war era talking about their situation, but it's not needed because we had the tour guide who was born and brought up in Malta, who told us stories which were much more impactful. The acting was really, really bad and the film was unnecessary. It brought my entire experience down to stand the last 15 mins of my tour staring at a projector on the wall, in a huge dingy cavern when I would've loved more to soak in the history and just explore a little more.
I think they had it to fill in the time, because for the tour two/three levels were open, but the rest were locked and the tour guide walked through it quite quickly so they need something to fill in the last quarter of the tour.
Why not have some plaques or a small permanent exhibition that explains the history of the origins of the tunnel itself or even war anecdotes? I think that's what they were going for with the film, but it really was bad and I would've preferred walking out without it even if the tour seemed shorter, but I didn't want to be rude.
Nonetheless, I did really like the tour guide and my suggestion would be to open up a few tunnels, place more plaques that explain the history as you walk through so it can be read, because I think the tour and the tunnels themselves are really interesting and a must see.
I had to book it at the last minute so it was 20 €. It's cheaper, 10 € pre-booked I think and I would recommend that.
I would also like to add that the man who sold me the ticket at the counter was quite impatient and sounded extremely irritated at every single question I had, which is highly unprofessional. I understand it's tough to sit day in and out, manning the counter and juggling so many tourists, but I at least hoped he would be a little polite seeing as I'm not there to cause trouble, but genuinely confused and interested to get the best possible experience out of my purchase.
Otherwise, an excellent...
Read moreBooked tickets last year to secure them as always sell out so early. Sadly a family member has been diagnosed with terminal cancer preventing us travelling (stage 4 bowel, liver and stomach cancer) approx 6 months left. I reached out to ask if the tickets could be cancelled (yes I was aware of the cancellation policy) however these are exceptional circumstances and had hoped someone with half a heart would review and be kind enough to agree a refund. After 4 emails and nearly 3 months of trying to get a response the best I could be offered was to revert to the website for cancellation terms and they could cancel and try and resell the ticket and could then refund me less 20% cancellation fees. I am somewhat astounded and very disappointed that a country we have been visiting for 34 years as a family has lost all the values it once had. Our children have now introduced their children to Malta as we all enjoyed visiting so much. I guess business is business and money is money!, Its just such a shame and country that once had a huge heart now does not. This was something we really wanted to do but due to unforeseen circumstances cannot. Lesson learned do not pre plan and instead enjoy what u can when there and if tickets are not available go somewhere else and fill their pocket with money instead. There is so much to do in Malta so please do it but perhaps give these guys a wide berth until u get to the country. We also know there will be no issue with them reselling the ticket at full face value as they were booked for...
Read moreHaving read a load of positive reviews I was very confident that this would be a great experience - and it was. We took the 10am tour on a Sunday and arrived early. The ticket said meet 30 minutes before at the Muze. The entrance was closed at that time and we duly waited. 15 minutes before we decided to search around as the hole we would go down is a couple of streets away. There is another entrance to the Muze, on the side, not opposite the statue of Jean de Valette.
The tour was great. It is in English, it is underground and damp. You need to have sensible footwear and should expect to have to wear donated footwear if necessary. The negative reviews are always interesting to read. It's a shame some people can't get over themselves. If you can't make it, you will lose your money - it's in the terms. There is insurance you can take out to cover you, the establishment you booked with has no such option. If you have poor mobility, this is not for you. If you are extremely claustrophobic -...
