Freedom Square — Attraction in Bratislava

Freedom Square (Námestie slobody) is one of the most important squares in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It is located in the heart of the Old Town, a short walk from Bratislava Castle and the Old Bridge.

This was quite undeveloped area still in 1970s. Comunist regime decided to build here a huge memorial to Stalinist servant and national comunist dictator Gottwald. His statue was blown away right after velvet revolution.

Fountain in middle was huge and also technically expensive to run and maintain so it came out of service soon after.

Even today you can hear some people call this square "Gotko" as shortened from it's previous name.

For me as local this square is perfectly describing "communist signature" and it is demonstrating our ability to handle, demolish, maintain and struggle with our communist past. In fact past 30 years of freedom no local government was able to take real decisions what to do here.

This park is typical of the Marxist view that man exists to tame nature, and that nature exists to serve man. Any greenery is carefully walled in concrete, and wide, shadowless concrete alleys are designed more for large Mayday assemblies of red-flag-waving workers than for relaxing strolls.

The big "Freedom fountain" is a stainless-steel sculpture of a flower, rather ironic in a place where real, living flowers are rare; it's now broken down, so the gigantic basin serves as an open-air dustbin. (Update: the fountain is now being reconstructed, and should be completed by 2023, with new shallow basins enabling visitors to cool down in summer).
