The history in the museum was wonderful, but the staff/volunteers at the entrance on 7/25/23 around 11:30 am were incredibly rude. I don’t think the front desk ladies saw me standing nearby when they were commenting on the behavior of the children, most likely mine, in the museum. Comments from the ladies included “if that were mine they would have got a swat on the butt the first time” and “wow the parenting here sure is lacking” etc. We got the stare down from these ladies as we left shortly afterwards. Instead of visiting the museum and making the suggested donation, we could have stayed at home and plopped our kids in front of screens, but we’re out here trying and learning. No, our children were not perfectly behaved (they’re 3 & 5), but they did not break anything or disrupt anyone else’s experience at the museum. They’ve also been in the car for hours on end in order to visit the little town of Deadwood. Young families have limited amount of vacation time and money to spend. I guess next time we’ll take our business, our dollars, and our...
Read moreLoved this museum! Highly recommend making time to stop here. We were a little late in the day and wished we had more time, but we understand they have a closing time. If you enjoy history, I suggest planning 1 to 2 hours to go through the entire museum. Lots to see and read.
One thing that is a little annoying is the free entry with suggested donation. There was a person standing right at the entry with the donation box and suggested donation sign, pointing out a suggested amount for our group. When you walk in you are pretty forced to leave a donation. I feel like we would have left more if we were "pressured" to leave a donation when we were going. At that point we were impressed at the expanse of history in the little museum that we would have felt it was worth more than originally given. But because we already donated and I thought it was a little rude, I chose not to leave additional. I guess everyone views that differently, so this is just...
Read moreThis museum was a great way to learn the history of the town and the expansion and correction that occurred over the years due to the gold rush. There's a recommended $3 donation for adults to enter, but the museum is worth more than that. It's a self-guided tour with lots of information and cool historical objects on display. You could easily spend an hour and a half in here leaning into the history and the culture of the area. It's within walking distance of historic Deadwood Main Street. There is a small gift shop that offers mostly souvenirs for kids with a few options that...
