The Brothel Deadwood — Attraction in Deadwood

I popped in to explore some of Deadwood’s seedier history, thinking this would delve into the sex trade of the 1800s but what I experienced was something so much more: a nuanced perspective on sex work, an insight into the history of Deadwood, and the stories and experiences of some of the towns most colourful inhabitants from the 1800s to 1980s.

Sue was lead the guided tour, with each room representing a defined stretch of time, but her knowledge was on-point, her delivery theatrical, and her openness to questions unmatched.

The Brothel could easily have delved into sordid aspects of Deadwood history. Instead, it treats the subject matter openly, respectfully, and honestly. I imagine, after hearing about the various Madams who ran the brothels, that they would be proud that their heritage is being communicated in this way.

The Deadwood Brothel Museum is not your average history tour—it’s like stepping back in time to the spiciest part of the Wild West. Each room is set up with period furniture, costumes, and stories that make you realize: life back then was equal parts hard work, high drama, and a whole lot of whiskey.

Highlights: • Every room has its own vibe, from elegant to… let’s just say “colorful.” • The bar setup makes you think the ladies of the house were running one heck of a happy hour. • The stories are equal parts fascinating, tragic, and funny (seriously, the wild west had more drama than Netflix). • The wallpaper and furniture alone are worth the stop—HGTV could never.

The brothel tour was one of the best in Deadwood. This part of the town’s history is quite fascinating and my tour guide (sort of tall, 90s haircut, glasses. I want to say his name is Thomas?) did a wonderful job detailing the social and economic impact that sex work had on the town. The experience was just as much educational as it was entertaining. I came a bit late, but my tour guide stuck around to answer my questions (and I had a lot lol). I appreciate him going the extra mile!
