An emerald gem overlooking Superior Bay and the Twin Ports Harbor, this may be one of Duluth's sweetest surprises. From the N 1st Ave West intersection with W 5th St, a wide and welcoming double stairway is flanked by colorful, family-friendly murals depicting all the delights the City has to offer. As one approaches, Cascade Park's most unusual feature rises above the sweeping lawns: the turret of a castle befitting the view seen from standing on the flat, circular platform behind the rounded enclosure. From each side of this towering wonder, 4 ft high walls extend on each side to prevent accidental falls onto the lush shrubbery and lumpy grass covering the massive roots of the grand trees that formed the foundation of the rolling, terraced terrain. Dog bags are provided above the waste can near the picnic area, where two wooden bench-and-tables, and two standing hibatchi grills are provided near the soft sandy playground level and the swings one short sliding hill below. There's even some pavement for hopscotch or jumprope, and paved paths for bike-riding. If something more peaceful is on your agenda, there are wooden benches along the paths that over look the sparkling lake- your choice, sun or shade. There are shallow steps at intervals in the center path leading up to the picnic/playground area, but a longer path (all are paved) winds gently to the bird-watching area in the west end and switches back toward the playground, passing a lovely fruit tree surrounded by a low round garden. This continues to the single bit of sloping roadway, making the park accessible to wheelchairs, strollers, and little red wagons. Even those of us whose joints have seen stronger days can enjoy the pace this quiet, natural paradise offers, four blocks up from the city bustle and the...

Read moreThe playground equipment was in good shape. The play surface / sand around it was not, as it was rife with weeds. There was a lower section with poles that looked like they used to be swings which my kid would have appreciated. There was water crossing the sidewalk that led up to the gazebo at the top of the park from some sort of natural spring or underground pipe leak. It's grown slime and become a safety hazard that my daughter slipped and fell on. All in all though it's a nice park with...
