I went yesterday to pick up some supplies for a new hobby I'm starting, and I was very disappointed with the service I received. I walk in at 6:45 and was greeted with "we have about 15 mins left" as soon as I open the door. Thanks for the warm welcome! I was well aware of the time, as I was at my job 30 mins late, which put me behind schedule. I had no intention of keeping the employees late on a Friday night; I had a specific list, and was prepared to get in and out in less than 15 minutes...if I could get just a little help locating some items.
So I went straight to the items that I knew the location of, and put them in my basket. I took a quick look for a chuck that was on my list and on sale, and after not seeing it right off I asked if they had the chuck that was going off sale that day. The response I got was, "we've already put those damn flyers away". I thought he might know where they were, and in respect of their closing time I thought it would be best to ask for help rather than wondering around aimlessly (note that I asked for help, because to this point my pleasant greeting was the only service I received). He did reluctantly help me find it, and to my response of "thank you"...nothing. Just carry the item to the counter and try to force me to checkout.
At this point I'm not happy to say the least. The next lady comes in, and she is instantly greeted with the closing countdown as well. Luckily for her the other associate offers help, and from what I heard did a good job of explaining and getting her the product she needed.
So now I'm down to one small item that I have to have to do the project I want to do over the weekend. I have about five minutes left in the "countdown", and I'm scrambling to find a set of bushings in the pen area. If you've ever seen that, it's a sea of plastic bags that can be difficult to locate one specific item. So I get, from the counter, "you ready yet?" My response, "yeah I just need to find this set of bushings." I'm hoping for something like "which ones, let me help you find find them", but instead I get, "well we gotta shut this thing down". I've got a couple minutes left, so I'm trying my best to find them as quickly as possible, and now I get from the counter, "what's your phone number?" Really? Instead of helping me find one thing, your going to stand at the counter out of eyesight and ask me to yell my number across the store? Is it too hard to figure out that helping me would help us both get out of here on time?
I honestly thought about leaving my basket in the isle, but that would be a crappy thing to do, and it would also screw up my plans for my weekend project, so I proceed to go pay. I get my receipt and it is time stamped 7:00.40. The other guy comes up with the lady he helped, and Mr. Customer Service makes a slight jab about him taking too long. I stayed quite, just said thanks and left, but was very near my breaking point.
So I apologize for checking out 40 seconds past closing time. Maybe with a little help, we could have avoided that inconvenience. I'm not going to lie, I have dealt with a couple very nice folks since going to this store over the last year (reason for 2 versus 1 star), but I have received the brush off from this associate more than once, and I refuse to do it again. I will be back, because there are times it's just too convenient not to, but I will gladly pay shipping or drive to Lexington when time permits to keep from being an inconvenience at this store again. This is the only review I've ever done, good or bad, probably no one cares, but I hope it at least saves someone the frustration I dealt with. Shop elsewhere if possible, or cross your fingers that you get one of...
Read moreSimply put, I just love coming here.
I think I've interacted with three different employees across my visits. Every time, everyone has been SO helpful and informative. I always feel very heard when I explain when I'm working toward, and end up leaving feeling like I have all the information and tools I need to accomplish my project. I've never felt like I'm being over-sold things that I don't need or that aren't quite right for me... when I come away buying more than I expected, it's 100% my own fault lol.
But the thing I really want to express is that the folks here have never made me feel talked-down to or stupid. I come to this shop as a woman that is new to the craft, but know I could probably be in the hobby for 20 years and still run the risk of having men assuming I'm out of my element. No one at this Woodcraft location has ever made me grimace because they've over-explained something. No one here has made me feel like they doubt whether I'm up to the job, or talked over my ideas about what I'd like to try. My preferred learning strategy around crafting things is to "wing it" and happily pivot if I fail, and no one was rolling their eyes at my currently less-than-professional setup and skill level.
I wish that my comfort as a woman here doesn't feel like such a notable dynamic, but it is. So I'm EXTREMELY appreciative for the good vibes, and for the...
