I'll start by saying this our driver did an exceptional job under the conditions. We were in JT on October 19 with enough other tourists to make NYC look like a ghost town. JT was gridlocked. The last mile into the center of town took 1 hour.
We were on the 1:30 tour. Our driver had to fight traffic for most of the tour but he kept us occupied with his commentary, music and sing-alongs. He was most accommodating, had a positive attitude and is a tribute to his company. I'm believe they appreciate how much good will he creates.
The least interesting parts of the tour were visits to a Corp of Engineers lake made for flood control and the attendant campgrounds and Lehigh Gorge State Park. Maybe these would have been more interesting were the trees a little more vibrant; maybe the were added for the weekend to get out of the traffic jams and the mass in humans in town.
For me, the most interesting part was the visit to the JT memorial. Our driver was very knowledgeable of JT's life and whether or no you're a sports fan that man's life was incredibly interesting.
Overall, I would recommend this tour should you be...
Read moreI was very disappointed with this tour. The guide repeatedly made inappropriate remarks that were disrespectful and inaccurate.
He claimed “no Native Americans care if he says Indian,” which is dismissive of Indigenous voices who prefer other terms. He stated that Jim Thorpe's family supports his use of the term "Indian".
When speaking about Jim Thorpe, a legendary athlete and member of the Sac and Fox Nation, he reduced Thorpe’s financial struggles to “his divorces and 3 wives probably had a lot to do with it.” This grossly oversimplifies the real systemic racism and hardships Thorpe faced, and it came across as flippant and disrespectful.
Lastly he mocked where I am from after asking, which felt unprofessional and unnecessary.
Overall, the experience was disappointing because I expected to learn accurate history and feel welcomed as a guest, not hear stereotypes or jokes at my expense. I cannot recommend this tour company unless they make changes to ensure their guides present history with accuracy, professionalism, and respect. I honestly should have left before the tour started given his...
Read moreWhat a fun experience! The trolley is very comfortable, the open side design is wonderful for maximizing views and air flow, especially on such a hot, summer day. Our tour guide, PJ, had a lot of information to share. We learned about Jim Thorpe (the man), history about the town when it was Mauch Chaunk, how anthracite coal played a part in not only industrialization of the town, but development of the gravity railroad and thusly, the first 'roller coaster'. We got to see the many shops and eateries in town, which is fantastic for making a game plan for the rest of the visit. A short drive to the outskirts of town provided a lovely breeze, and we picked up speed, and culminated with a visit to Mauch Chaunk Lake. My only regret was that we didn't have the time (nor gear!) to stop and enjoy a swim ourselves! PJ was engaging and clear in her story telling. The music was a fun touch (she has a lovely voice!). I would absolutely recommend this as an affordable, informative, and entertaining way to enjoy an hour and a half of your...
