A truly enjoyable way to learn the history of the town Mauch Chunk/ Jim Thorpe.
The kind older gentleman who was running the museum was funny, insightful and engaging. Since it was a slow day he gave us a bit more in-depth explanations of the history of coal, the flood, and the origins of the name change. There's a lot more, but it's best to see in person.
All the items were lovingly displayed and easy to see. The place radiated a feeling of genuine enjoyment for the subject matter.
It was very pleasant to watch someone so knowledgeable about a subject explain so many topics. We even took some pictures to ghost hunt, but no luck.

Read moreThe museum hosts lots of historic materials about the town, good for museum lovers and history fans. We arrived only half an hour before the closure, so got 25% off on ticket. The museum is run by a couple and the explanations by the lady owner were great. The coal story is definitely a must-hear one, I myself actually saw this type of coal while hiking near Jim Thorpe. Come to discover this hidden gem in the busy Jim Thorpe town. Tour highly recommended, as the materials were not very self-explanatory, you will get to learn a lot more out by talking to the staffs there. Remember to check out why it is called "America's little...
Read moreI hesitated on paying the full price (with video), but I was not the least bit sorry. It was worth every penny. The tour was led by a woman whose understanding of the history was encyclopedic plus she wasn't going on rote memory; she addressed our questions and presented the history in an entertaining yet face laden way. The museum was her prop, but it was perfectly assembled, and so the story became not only about economics but about people. She was also fun. It was evident she loved what she was doing. I was sorry I had a schedule or I would have stayed much longer. If you go to Jim Thorpe, please add this to your list of...
