Public Art "Ballerina Clown" — Attraction in Los Angeles

30 foot Ballerina Clown. Created by Jonathan Borofsky and unveiled in 1989. I love this work of art that has been here for a LOOOONG Time. I feel like it really captures and incapsulates the mood of Venice, happy, sad, weird all at once. I was very disappointed when CVS moved in. seems so out of place to have a CVS under such an iconic art installation. One of my favorite things to do is drive by with people from out of town or not familiar with the area and love to see their reaction when they happen upon it and discover it for themselves. Ah - the horrifyingly interesting "Ballerina Clown" by Jonathan Borofsky. This...interesting...sculpture hangs over a CVS and completely dominates the building it hangs off on. It's very easy to get good photographs of this sculpture - it sits on an intersection - so you can get multiple angles from varying distances. It's walking distance (actually visual distance) from the Public Art "Giant Binoculars" by Frank Gehry.

This clown. This clown seeped into my subconscious the first time I saw it, and occasionally dominates my thoughts in my most contemplative moments. Was it there before the CVS, or installed later? Is it based on a real person/clown? Does it come to life and dance when nobody is watching? Is it a guardian, protecting Venice from some ancient eldritch horror originating in the sea? Would it be good luck if I crawled up there and rubbed it's shoe?
