I attended the 8AM (Traditional) service at Oceanview Baptist Church (Myrtle Beach) on Sunday, January 24th. The regular preacher was away (on vacation) leading me to wonder, “when you live in Myrtle Beach WHERE do you go on vacation?” I was greeted warmly by Jean Massey. She asked if I was a “first-timer” & then returned with a “goody bag” which had a travel mug w/OVBC logo and an info card explaining some of the church ministries. I actually used the travel mug on my trip home to Ohio. The Traditional service features old-time hymns but they are played by a rock band, so it’s more than the typical piano/organ music I’m used to back home. Also, the (fill-in) preacher was the only one in the building wearing jeans. The 8AM congregation wore suits, ties, dresses, and pantsuits. I was on vacation so I wore a button-down collared shirt and khakis. I felt comfortable but a bit “underdressed” (no judgment here). The young preacher (Aaron, I think) gave a passionate and scriptural message, it was the end of a series called “Do Overs” and was quite “timely” for just concluding 2020. Overall, I liked the service and the ppl. Even the parking lot “crew” were friendly! I will definitely return next time I’m in Myrtle Beach (perhaps...
Read moreNope. Didn't feel the spirit much here. Worship/singing was ok, but not very inspirational - basically the same song (key, beat, pace, etc) with different words. The singers were very good.
The woman at one entrance of the sanctuary apparently felt like it was her job to touch everyone on the arm as they walked by her, to guide them in - like children?
Preacher was a performer, lacked authenticity, didn't seem genuine to me. His sermon lacked focus. Spent way too much time on a simple analogy. Instead of "hunger & thirst for justice" being about 'desire' or 'desire for good' it was something else. Instead of 'justice' being about praying for God's justice and will it was something else. He didn't talk to those who experienced injustice in their lives at time - which would be an obvious thing to do.
They focus on chasing happiness rather than having a meaningful life.
Instead of focusing on asking for God's will in your life, to be dependent on God - he had a few trivial examples of 'try to do it yourself'. He didn't mention Jesus much at all. So in my opinion the sermon was kind of a performance that didn't hit the meaningful aspects of...
Read moreToday I'm very sad that I planned my families entire day around the 11:30 service. The first thing I did this morning was check the website to make sure there were no changes in the services. The website said Dec 31st 11:30 service. I understand your congregation may know the changes. But for the people who visit when in town...we wouldn't know the changes. I could've easily made the 9 or 10. Instead of eating out we could've just eaten at the hotel and made it to the service. We love visiting the church when in town. The pastor gives an amazing word and the praise and worship is also great. But in the future please update your homepage to reflect the times that are available for service. Not only was I turned away at the door but many more that assumed the website was correct. Happy New...
