Porch Swing Orchestra – Barry Stone Rubber Band – Holly Coulis at Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery

Let’s try a two-for-one. Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery presents two contrasting shows–different mediums, approaches and concerns. And, the contrast really plays nicely, giving the view a range of artistic concerns from space and specificity to some of the fundamentals: line, plane, color, and texture.

In the first gallery, there is an installation of photographs accompanied by audio, and wall vinyl…so much media that I inaccurately recall there being video as well. I guess this is to say the work really moves. It is activated, which emphasizes that the time and space of each site, including the one you stand in while in the gallery, to be of a particular time and space…neither timeless nor reaching. Something about this really privileges the artist and their projects and allows you to empathize or immerse yourself in that specificity.

Coulis, whose paintings are always fun for me, packs the second gallery with mostly abstract painting. Having moved away from graphic still lifes, her work still contains a similarly playful color palette. In addition to abstraction, the work gets more complicated in the way she handles line (raspy to tight and hard edged) and, perhaps, with inside jokes to keep the work interesting to make (she signs the face of one single painting “Coulis” in a curly script). The new moves demonstrate that the artist is still having fun painting and takes the viewer along for the “fun-ride,” functioning almost as maps or how-tos on...
