Great art gallery. I came here first to see the exhibition "Jaeheon Lee: Ghosts in the Garden," after reading a review in the Brooklyn Rail. Unlike most of the Korean avantgarde post World War II, this artist, born 1976, does virtuosic figurative paintings. The paintings have a dreamy or Pre-Raphaelite quality, to quote William Corwin from his review in the Brooklyn Rail. I also saw diverse influences ranging from Marlene Dumas and Francis Bacon (one triptych a la Bacon) to Gustav Klimt and even Friedrich Hundertwasser. According to the review by Jungmin Cho provided by the gallery, the artist was also inspired by Korean pop culture "idols". The new exhibition "Xin Liu: The Permanent and the Insatiable" is equally innovative and inspiring.
