first dim sum meal in a very long time at seng seafood today. we'd been once or twice before and had really liked it (probably a 4 or 5 star review if i rated my other visits in prior years). their prices used to be the same for all dish sizes, and presumably is still the same. our bill came out to $55 before tip for 10 items (which fed 3 adults and 1 child and are definitely not all pictured here ... was too hungry). the bill did include two shrimp cheung fun (rice rolls) which are usually pretty pricey at your typical dim sum establishment.
all dishes were delicious, but we were quite disappointed by how limited the selections were today (there seemed to be way more in our previous visits as well as what is listed on their website). not sure if it might have been because we were visiting a little later in the day by dim sum standards (~1:00 pm). there was also virtually no service provided (e.g., water was never refilled) but the cart ladies were really nice in trying to help find the dishes that we wanted.
we had made a reservation over the phone, but it didn't seem like they understood once we arrived. thankfully, we didn't need to wait long as we were put at an eight-person table with another party of four. considering the clientele visiting, you know that the dim sum is authentic. certainly can't go wrong here with your basic dim sum selections, though may opt to go earlier next time to see if there are more options or visit another place for...
Read moreUpdate: Had dinner here for the first time. Four of us had a nice sized table. Restaurant was lightly busy at 7:30pm in a Friday. The dinner menu was very limited. However, if you ask the manager, they can make you dishes off the menu! Was very pleased with the volume and quality of each dish. Approx $22.50/pp with soda and tea service. Would definitely go again.
This place is okay for dim sum. I found the restaurant more visually appealing than the food. The restaurant looks old and worn out from the outside and staircase. However, inside was spacious, pretty, and modern looking. I was there around 12:30pm, which is towards the tail end of dim sum brunch. I didn't see much variety both in hot food and sweet pastries. I also didn’t see any vegetarian dishes! It could have been the time I was there. Next time I will go there earlier to be sure there is more variety. Waiters run around a lot, so you need to grab their attention for anything you need, like water and extra food off the menu. The waitors and managers are somewhat brusque as to be expected...
Read moreVery authentic old-school dim sum experience with shared tables, old women rinsing out their plates and chopsticks with the tea. I don't think this place has changed much since the 80s, probably with the same decor, including carpet and wallpaper. I appreciate dives but this place brings it to another level. It probably doesn't help that you enter through a small lobby (with no signs that you've entered an eating establishment) and go up some cruddy-looking stairs.
Anyway, on to the food.... It was very hot and crowded on a Saturday morning, which made me not very hungry but we still managed to order quite a few dishes (spare ribs, phoenix claws aka chicken feet, steamed and baked salted egg yolk buns, tripe, shumai, shrimp crepes, shrimp stuffed eggplant, shrimp dumplings). The food was pretty good though a little oily. A highlight for me was the baked buns as the filling was still gooey (some places overcook these and the filling becomes solid). Everything else was ok - nothing stood out as particularly terrible or...
