My daughter and I have attended several shows the past few years we've been in Savannah. This last Sunday's performance of the Trailer Park musical was a serious disappointment. After buying season tickets before the performance, anticipating how great it would be, then watching a "comedy" that was not funny, we each emailed the theatre, expressing our concerns.
As of today, we have not received a response to our emails. We did not want to leave a review before giving the staff a chance to respond. My daughter and I are now in the process of requesting a refund of the season passes. Below is my email...
Greetings and salutations:
My daughter and I live here in Savannah and have done for just over three years now. We love supporting the arts, both the Savannah theatre and the Philharmonic. When my daughter mentioned this musical, I was excited to see it! I grew up in rural Arkansas with many a friend and family living in double-wides.
Mind you, we had never heard of this musical, but we were told it was a comedy. We remembered the "Drowsy Chaperone" and still randomly quote, "While you still can!" and remembered the Momma Mia cast having so much fun and spontaneity. But this, musical...was a train wreck. We left not quite knowing how to process what we had just seen. We looked forward to laughter and endorphins, but left feeling as though we'd attended a tragedy.
During my CJ studies, I interned at the Gwinnet County GA Drug & DUI court. Can huffing has taken many a life; the markers were lighthearted fun, but the can was not. The abducted child, the repeated "road kill", the blaming the stripper for a husband's poor choices and the wife's inability to deal with her phobia. Of all the characters, Pippi was the healthiest in the bunch, and the actress did an incredible job portraying her.
On a practical note, there were some sound issues. At times it was very hard to understand the characters both in speech and song. Also, I didn't understand the humor of a dark skinned baby with a caucasian mother, especially when the "pride" flags were used as props (gift from the father to the mother inferring he's gay..?) My daughter's father is from New Orleans, so mixed relations aren't suprising.
The one thing I love about the Savannah Theatre are the two married couples who create a touchstone of familiarity and family - I look forward to seeing new characters brought to life in y'all's unique way!
But, I think from now on, we'll research the musicals / productions beforehand, then decide whether or not to attend. As an Autist, humor can be a challenging thing. You all did it beautifully before, and I am certain you all will...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy husband and I went here on a friday night at the end of May for our 1-year anniversary weekend trip and saw "Savannah Live", and I am sooo glad we did this! If I recall, there were 7 "stars" of the show, plus a special guest singer that I'm not going to give away :) 4 guys and three girls who are all so talented. I like how inbetween set changes they would have the band perform something cool to keep up occupied, and the guitar player was HILARIOUS as well with his crazy legs! A great variety of songs, from newer pop music to oldies like the beach boys and elvis. Great variety for all ages, but I can say that my husband and I are in our early 20's, and were definitely some of the youngest people there, but that's okay! It was also nice that they had a 15 minute intermission halfway through so we could get up and stretch our legs. The ONLY negative I have is that we got there just a a few minutes before it started because we bought tickets weeks ahead of time, and knew our assigned seats so had an usher direct us to them, our tickets said we were in ROW 4, but she obviously sat us in ROW 3, but there was already people in ROW 4 right behind us, so I didn't think anything about it AT FIRST, but then the people whose seats we were now in came up to tell us that those were their seats. So somewhat embarrasses, we had to get up, find another usher (this is now while the show is starting mind you) and they had to then tell the older couple who were in our REAL seats in 4th row to move, we took their seats, and that was the last of it. Just a little but more organization would have...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThere is a lot of places in Savannah to hang out and enjoy the city. If you are in a mood for music and want to get a way from the coffee shop scene, The Savannah Theater is a good place to go. My daughter and I came here a few days ago to check out what was showing and it was a musical show. "Its a musical daddy, are you sure" My daughter said, "you don't like musical". Well I thought to myself, there was nothing else to do except the bar scene, coffee shop scene or walk around eating in different places. So I decided to get a couple of tickets for my wife and I to see the "Savannah Live". We really enjoyed the musical show. The musicians and the cast were very talented and there were a variety of songs/scene from Elvis, 70's, 80's and from you favorite oldies TV show to the modern beating on a trash can scene. All the scenes were great, enjoyable and some were funny. They even had audience participation which made it a bit different and kept you into the music scene. It really captured your interest at all times and kept you entertained. The musicians had their solo scene and played really well. The musicians and cast really did a great job entertaining the audience and keeping their interest up with the different sequence of music and show. My wife and I really enjoyed it and were entertained for the evening. If you are around Savannah and would like a different scene, "Savannah Theater" is a good place to go. Even thought my family knows I'm not really into musical shows, this one kept me...
