Our 2-night stay at Amari Colombo was, for the most part, a memorable one. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with cinnamon sodas and cool towels—a much-appreciated respite from Colombo’s intense heat.
As a relatively new hotel, the facilities were impressive: excellent air conditioning, a stunning rooftop infinity pool, and Prego, the Italian restaurant on the 26th floor, which offered spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and the city skyline as the sun set.
Our spacious room had a beautiful ocean view as well. The food was delicious and in-room dining service was prompt in serving us meals and clearing the table.
However, a disappointing moment stood out during check-in. While we received the warm welcome, our elderly driver-cum-guide—who had been with us throughout our 12-day journey across Sri Lanka—was not offered the same courtesy.
In every other hotel we stayed at, he had been respectfully offered a welcome towel and drink. Here, when he politely requested a towel, one of the receptionists responded with a dismissive attitude and exchanged a telling look with her colleague, implying he was not entitled to such treatment.
I believe this was uncalled for, and it highlights the need for hotel management to ensure that front desk staff—who are the first point of contact for guests—are mindful of their body language.
First impressions matter, and a little more warmth and sensitivity would go a long way. While our driver was eventually offered a drink from the lounge, the manner in which the situation was handled left much to be desired.
Later, when he stepped into the lounge area which wasn’t crowded —just to admire the view from the window facing the entrance,—he was told he wasn’t allowed inside. Our English-speaking driver was neatly dressed and carried himself professionally. In fact he was MORE conversant and fluent in English than the front desk staff who were mumbling away.
Hotel policies aside, it was disappointing to see such a lack of basic courtesy toward an elderly man who had served us so well. He was no stranger as he was with us ensuring that we go to our rooms safely after a long day of shopping.
It wasn’t about ACCESS to the lounge—it was about the staff’s condescending ATTITUDE and body language, which was entirely unnecessary. The hotel may deliver 5-star comfort and visual appeal, but true hospitality is about how you make every individual feel, regardless of their status.

Equally, Sithumini from the front desk was absolutely wonderful. From her warm welcome to the smooth check-in, and even checking up on us later during the stay, she truly made us feel valued and well taken care of.
We also had a fantastic experience at the rooftop bar thanks to Pramod, who was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our time there.
It’s the people at Amari Colombo who make each stay so memorable. I’m already excited to be back again next month always a pleasure to return! First Stay.

From the moment we arrived, the front office team made us feel welcome with their warm smiles and professional service. Check-in was smooth and every interaction after that was friendly and helpful, which instantly made us feel at ease.
The rooms were fantastic; spacious, spotless, and thoughtfully designed with modern touches. It was the perfect place to unwind, and we really appreciated how comfortable and peaceful everything felt.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Susantha, the Security Manager, who was kind, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. He was such a lovely person to speak with, and his warmth left a lasting impression.
Dilshan at the Prego Bar absolutely stood out. He made some of the best cocktails we’ve ever had, and always did so with a big smile. His positive energy made our evening feel extra special.
At breakfast, Aravinth, the restaurant supervisor, was always attentive and kind, making sure everything ran smoothly. We also want to thank Vihara from the all-day dining restaurant for her thoughtful and friendly service,she really made a difference with her kind attitude.
