I attended the MLS All Star game in Columbus with my 10 year old son and thought this hotel would be perfect due to the proximity of the stadium and pictures online. ||When we arrived at the hotel, my first impression of the parking garage and hotel was not good. I had already opted to pay the $25 daily parking fee but have since read that there are cheaper daily options available that I was unaware of. ||My son and I had a room on the 5th floor. The hallway was very dark and it smelled musty and gross. It was around 4 pm when we checked in and even during the day I did not feel comfortable walking down the hall. ||The halls had several large blower/ventilation (not sure what they were other than loud) units that indicated there had been some recent water or plumbing issues. When we entered our room, I felt that it was grimy and outdated. There was mold in the bathroom. The tub was dirty. My son's pillowcase was stained. He found an Oreo under the chair. The windows were so dirty. I had a bad feeling about the room from the moment we entered but figured we would just go to the game and come back to the hotel and sleep before driving home.||We got back to the hotel around 10:30 pm and stopped in the lobby to get a few snacks. The lady working repeatedly asked for my room number and last name, which made me uncomfortable because there was a man standing there listening and clearly it was just my son and I staying in the room. It just gave me a weird vibe. We went to our room and the machines in the hallway were still running. I'm pretty sure there was also an issue with the air conditioner. I called and asked if they run continuously and the employee said he thought they would stop eventually. I waited another hour and found the noise and smell of the room to be unbearable. The employee offered to switch my room so I woke my son up, went to the front desk, and got the keys to the new room. The new room was on the 4th floor, basically right below the room we had just been in. The 4th floor hallway was also dark and filled with the same machines that had been on the 5th floor. We entered the room and it actually felt like the a/c was working. It was after 1 am at this point and I just wanted to sleep for a few hours before driving home. Five minutes after being in the room, people started yelling in the room next to us. The noise continued so my son and I went to the lobby again and told the employee that the second room was even worse than the first. He offered an upgrade to a room on a higher floor but I declined. At that point, I assumed that there was not going to be a room available that would make me feel comfortable. We opted to stay in the lobby. There were several chairs down the hall from the registration desk and I put two chairs together so my son could get some sleep. The employee gave him a pillow and a blanket. I sat in another chair from 2 am until 6 am. I would have left earlier but definitely did not feel safe walking in the parking garage and the whole reason we stayed is because I prefer to not drive late at night. ||I travel quite a bit for leisure and work and have never had an experience like this before. Besides the lack of cleanliness in the room, I simply did not feel safe staying there with my son. ||I will say that the employee who was working at the registration desk overnight was very helpful and tried to be accommodating. I appreciated...
Read moreI am here now, shortly after the change to a Marriott property (prior: Doubletree by Hilton). It is identical to last year, minus some signage. The best 2 features of this hotel: spacious suite rooms and location! The worst 2: no free breakfast and no way to alter the temperature in the rooms (bathrooms vent well after a shower, thank goodness).
As with last year, the front desk employees are curtly courteous. They do "not know" the area (huh?), and will refuse to help with directions or even much with the parking (beyond basics). Discouraging, but luckily is only 5 minutes per trip spent with them.
The beds are very comfortable, and rooms are relatively clean (harder in a dated hotel).
We stay for the location, and are not displeased.
Edit to add: surprisingly my reservation, made in early September 2024 for a February/March 2025 stay, made while this was still a Hilton property, did NOT transfer! I found that I had no reservation when I could not find my reservation in the Hilton app! Thr internet told me this hotel changed ownership.
After getting nowhere with Marriott/Hilton customer service, I @'ed Marriott on X (Twitter) and they assisted in "retrieving" my old reservation. The thing is: the hotel was booked full (2 large local events) and had I not expressed my shock on X, I would not have had a room as I arrived. I do not normally check into a reservation 3 days before travel - I assume once made, a reservation never dies.
Marriott explained the issue thusly: since Hilton could not transfer my financial info (credit card info), I no longer had a "valid" reservation with Marriott (because not confirmed with a card). Odd, because they might have called, or contacted me via the app, or via mail. I am a Marriott BonVoy member - they know how to reach me!
BOTTOM LINE: when a hotel transfers ownership, the guests with pending reservations should experience ZERO PAIN. Both companies need to do better, there is no...
Read moreOlder Hilton Property in the Downtown Columbus Area.||We stayed in this Doubletree during a visit to the downtown Columbus area. There were several conventions going on in the area and this property compared to other was a reasonable price. The hotel is an older property which can lead to some disappointment as the heating and AC certainly needs an upgrade. On the hot days when the sun was facing my room, the room did get extremely hot and although the AC was jacked up to the max, it did very little to cool the room. I had to close the blinds in the living room and bedroom to keep the room cooler. The room I had was a large higher floor room with a great veiw of the river and the downtown area. I received a two-room suite that had a separate bedroom. The rooms are spacious and they keep them as clean as they can. I had a leather couch and a nice chair and ottoman to use during my stay. The bathrooms were clean but the floors of the showers were stained from many years of use. The bed was very comfortable as well. Housekeeping did not come to my room once during my four night stay but anytime I flagged down a housekeeper they changed out my garbage, replaced my bedsheets and replaced the bathroom towels. Wifi was easy to connect to and a good speed which allowed me to surf, stream and connect through a VPN. ||We ate at the restaurant twice during our stay, once for drinks and apps with our group and once for breakfast. The dinner menu has standard fare like burgers and wings and the breakfast is a wide array of hot and cold items served buffet style. If you workout while on the road the hotel gives you accesss to a health club that has a cardio room, a gymnasium and a weight room which was more than enough for a good workout. This hotel is certainly in need of an update but I had an overall...
