UPDATE: Contacted the management on the Facebook page and they were courteous and responsive. I'm not sure what they did to address it, but it's obvious they don't condone poor customer service.
Been coming here since the first week they opened. Always been a fan, mostly. But last night I need to call out a first for me and all the years I've lived in the neighborhood
Walk in with my girlfriend and go to the main bar. They had two female bartenders working that night. This is the shorter smaller one. My girlfriend ordered a slushie and the bartender turns to me and asked what I wanted and I responded: I'm good thanks I'm not drinking. I'm very respectful of the bar industry, I always tip even though I'm not drinking.
A minute later she puts a peps blue ribbon in front of me. Never mind the fact that I've never had a paps in my life nor had any intention to start now. But I say to her " I'm sorry there must be a mistake I'm not drinking I said I'm good" she gives me a dirty look, rolls her eyes and pulls back the beer. Don't think much of it until she comes back with a my change and makes a snarky comment saying "next time if I repeat something to you don't tell me that it's right." I'm momentarily stunned by her attitude. I had a $5 out to tip her for one cocktail but instead I switched it to a dollar and leaned over and said I was happy to overtip you for not drinking, your comment was completely unnecessary and unwarranted. So here's a dollar for the one drink. She then gave me a dirty look picked up the dollar and threw it back towards me. I'm not sure how someone of her disposition can be allowed to work in a customer service environment, but she's a poor reflection of the establishment. Or any establishment that has a service industry atmosphere. She was the only downside of a decent night.. Oh yes, it would be amazing if you guys would fix the Pac-Man joysticks. They've been...
Read moreI'm not typically a huge fan of bars persay and when I do, it's typically laid back spots with not a lot going on and not a lot of people. So for this to be the exact opposite of my cup of tea, it was honestly fantastic. I love the vibe of the place. It's really like a big wall to wall arcade, and it's pretty packed. There's a lot of different machines there. It will definitely take multiple trips to try them all unless you just kinda flash through. (If you're winning and surviving, it's gonna take a little longer obviously,) I guess the best part is that arcades, especially since they're not popular really anymore and you don't really see many these days. That kinda crowd is typically like mid-to-late 20's-to30s (especially early 30s or so) and so everyone's old enough to drink anyways. Might as well be a bar too. Nobody to young to drink probably even remembers arcade machines and stuff like that other than like chuck e cheese. But it's not an entire loss as far as the younger generation either. Video games are popular and so some younger kids are interested and drawn to that kind of environment. There's a really specific range of age demographics. You've got the young nerdy gamer kids old enough to drink and then you've got the almost middle aged kinda range and then even a few actual like middle age people as well, but not really a lot of cynical angry boomers (you know the ones that hang around THOSE type of bars, and most of them really hate technology anyway for the most part.) So what you get as a result is an awesome little arcade with a bar up front where you could easily spend all night and have a great time. It definitely was packed, but understandably so. I had a great time and would...
Read moreI visited 1 Up Arcade on April 5th, 2024, and was deeply disappointed by the discriminatory and unprofessional behavior of the staff. As a long-time resident of Capitol Hill and a frequent patron, I was shocked by the treatment my companion and I received.
Upon arrival, we ordered two canned beers, a Guinness Stout, and a Montucky Cold Snack. The bartender, an older lady with black/brown hair, quoted each beer at $10. My companion paid $12 for his beer, while I paid $10 for mine, believing it to be the correct price. However, after waiting for approximately 20 minutes, I became suspicious of the pricing, as I have never paid such high prices for canned beers at 1 Up Arcade.
I inquired with another bartender, a gentleman with spikey blonde hair, and was informed that the true prices were $4 for a Montucky Cold Snack and $6 for a Guinness Stout. Feeling deceived, we confronted the bartender, requesting a refund for the overcharged amount. However, instead of addressing the issue professionally, the bartender and a barback, described as a very skinny buzz cut individual, became hostile towards us. They accused us of lying and refused to refund the difference.
After a brief argument, the bartender begrudgingly returned $10, claiming that was the total amount we had given her. Subsequently, the barback informed us that we were cut off and asked us to leave, despite having consumed only one beer each.
This experience was unacceptable and unprofessional. We were simply seeking redress for being overcharged and were met with hostility and discrimination. I believe that action must be taken to address this issue and prevent similar incidents from occurring...
