This is an edit June 2020 to my original 3-star review in 2018 (pasted below).
I booked a room with a king bed, about $190. My girlfriend was excited but after we entered the room, I was very underwhelmed and it was nowhere near as nice as the queen room I had stayed in 2018. She suggested we go grab a bite to eat, so we did— over lunch she told me she has a very bad headache from the overwhelming smell of bleach and other cleaning chemicals used in the room. I stepped out from lunch to call the front desk and spoke with a fellow who said they would investigate into it and to stop by the front desk on my return. When we got back, this fellow had left and I was speaking with Oscar. Oscar initially upset me, because what he was telling me was nothing like the conversation I had on the phone with the previous fellow— but he did the right thing in the end. He came up and smelled the problem and booked us in another room— THIS room was gorgeous and had a king bed and no smell. Oscar also discounted our room, which we appreciated. I’m increasing the rating to a 4 because we didn’t experience any of the other problems as before and will try it again.
Original 2018 review:
The reviews appear to be really good for this hotel, so I was excited for us to stay here. I made the reservation by phone and spoke with Roxy, who was quite delightful. She gave me a discount on the rate due to some bridge construction that's going on, and made sure that I knew about this construction before booking. I asked for a Noon checkout and she said she would agree to that, and I asked her to please put that in the notes. We booked one of the Colorado rooms. Roxy took some time to give some recommendations for food and activities in the town. Below I list some problems we ran into, in chronological order, but it's problem #3 why I wouldn't stay here again, despite how much I actually really liked Roxy and the way she does a great job. Problem 1. When I arrived, Roxy wasn't there and the desk staff said there was a hard 11am checkout. I mentioned the Noon checkout and they said "No, we don't do that". I mentioned it should be in the notes and they said there was a note but that it actually said "it wasn't guaranteed". Argh, this wasn't what we discussed and I was tired from a 3-hour drive. The front desk staff were otherwise very very friendly, though, I will say that. I called the front desk the following morning and Roxy answered and said right away "I got your Noon checkout for you". Great, I was appreciative but wish I hadn't had to spend part of the evening re-working our plans for the day. Problem 2. Upon entering the room, there was a weird smell. I couldn't tell if it was moldy / musty or some kind of cleaner or varnish. The smell subsided after a few moments but every time we entered the room we could smell it. The room looked nice and clean with a good view. The queen bed seemed smaller than our queen bed at home, but that may be just imagination. The wooden floor and antique furniture were very nice. Problem 3. The bathroom. First, the bathroom walls and door allow ALL sounds to filter through into the bedroom, even with the quiet automatic fan running. Someone goes pee, the other person hears every tinkle. Someone goes poo, they hear every little detail of that too. This is completely unacceptable to me, but it gets worse. The shower was terrible. The water had very very little pressure and kept vascillating between hot and cold. The water was too soft, making it incredibly difficult to rinse the soap off the body and the conditioner out of the hair. I kept thinking to myself that I'd been better off to have just went down to the hot springs and take my morning shower there. In summary, I've stayed at a lot of places in Glenwood Springs and they all have their issues one way or another. If checkout time isn't a problem for you and you don't mind the way I've described the bathroom, you'll probably otherwise really...
Read moreAlthough I was first hesitant to post a negative review about Hotel Colorado, I feel it’s imperative for everyone to hear about an ongoing safety issue at the hotel. For the record, my family has stayed at this hotel several times over the years and historically we have really enjoyed the hotel. The hotel is clearly deteriorating under the current management team.
Our recent stay was on December 27 and 28th. Upon getting out of the shower on the 28th, I see two strangers standing in our room. Obviously, I was extremely mortified to see two strangers in front of me (while I was naked!) and thank god I was not traveling solo!
Upon discussing with Gustavo at the front, he was apologetic of the mistake saying there was nothing they could do and they would have their manager reach out and Give me a call back. As of today- still no follow up from management.
Upon discussing with Gustavo, I understand mistakes happen and clearly this was the case. His lack of compassion was evident. He literally did nothing as I was crying about the incident. Apologies were given but literally no action and certainly no compassion was felt.
The bigger issue is that Gustavo stated this happens all the time (when you don’t follow correct procedure). I suspect this is due to the old traditional keys they pass out and no fob access to rooms.
Trying not to be dramatic but god forbid this would’ve happened to my daughter who often travels alone. Traumatic for me to say the least but this could’ve been way worse if an unsavory stranger had been given access to a single travelers room! Still waiting to hear back from the manager , and no response to my safety concerns to date.
Lastly, before this horrific invasion of privacy, I asked the front desk if there was any room that had the ability to crack a window. During my last two stays both rooms had the windows bolted down.
Gustavo said all exterior windows are bolted down due to customers complaining about bugs.Seriously?! Everyone knows there are VERY few bugs in Colorado and especially at that altitude. Just another example of a management company being completely out of touch with their client. Love a little fresh air at night? DONT stay here. Gustavo said the management company doesn’t listen to them.
Paralyzed front desk staff with no ownership/management support giving them zero empowerment seems to be standard procedure at Hotel Colorado.
Lack of carrying, concern and action on the front desk staffs part, is mind blowing. DONT stay here if you're expecting any customer service or if safety is a top priority for you and...
Read moreCouple of things I wasn't overly appreciative of with this hotel. For starters, had a bit of a snafu when checking in; I don't have the same last name as my husband and so I was given a bit of grief trying to check in using his credit card despite it being the card I used to book, etc. It's not like I could leave as there was a line built up behind me and one guy checking everyone in.
All told, this was the first time in 10 years I've dealt with this but that definitely dampened the mood considerably for me. I was given stilted manufactured language lamenting that they do this for safety and how it is a general policy all hotels abide by (which is news to me) when I complained in their text app which I'm sure they'll replicate here if they deign to reply.
From then on, the noise pollution one experiences in this hotel takes the cake. I live downtown in a city and the noise I heard here was more than what we deal with. I could hear someone loudly guffawing and speaking excitedly several times. Doors slamming. At 3 AM as well. Not sure if it was down the hall, next door, or close by but crystal clear and disruptive. Either way, when you read the reviews here lamenting the noise, believe them. I thought I would be safe being on the third floor but it doesn't matter apparently. The parking directions were also miscommunicated from the front desk towards me and my husband (who was driving/parking while I was checking us in) so that was a bit stunted/problematic as well. $20 for parking as well.
Finally, the price differences between the rooms are heavily apparent. For $349/night, I didn't expect a dark, dingy hovel of a room with a view of the interior atrium a la Embassy Suites but here we were. At least you all have a fridge in the room and the shower is decent but that's about it. As someone who considers Glenwood a great mountain town and one in which I visit frequently, this one night stay from a big trip on the way back to the city was meant to ascertain if we should break our longstanding tradition of staying at the Hotel Colorado and try a newer place, one more so in town from a location standpoint and we were woefully disappointed. I had heard from a few that since the new owners took over this hotel and changed it from the Hotel Denver that it was not what it once was so I guess I found that out as aforementioned. I won't be back and will not advise staying here to anyone I...
