A review from a healthcare prospective - If you're reading this review because you're trying to calculate a way to stay in Waikiki without breaking the bank- I was and am still in your shoes (or sandals). I chose this hotel from afar (Colorado) in hopes to bridge a gap between being here for work and having a safe and affordable place to rest my head at night. I'm currently writing this review from one of the hotel rooms, the third one in fact.
Pros: -I always felt/feel safe, leaving early in the morning to hoof it over to the Sheraton for my conferences and back again after the sun was down. There was a review I read regarding some violence on the sidewalk outside, that hasn't happened during my stay so far. -Certainly a fraction of the cost compared to the surrounding facilities. -Location is very good. -Lovely Koi pond. -*MOST of the staff is empathetic, respectful and kind, except for Clark and the owner. That will be explained henceforth.
Cons: I would kindly invite the owner/operator of this property to stay 3 nights, as I did, in room 411 and 309. Current new room is fine, but the other two have a mold issue. By mold issue I want to be sure that everyone understands that if you can smell, it is akin to a soggy thrift store. There's absolutely no amount of cleaning the carpet or air spraying (which was offered as one solution to me) that will remedy that issue. So please, Mr. or Mrs. Owner/operator or Mr. Clark (who was impatient with me when I asked the first time to be moved to a room that didn't have a mold issue)- please spend a few nights in those rooms. Be sure you have asthma. That's a twist, because mold really brings on asthma issues for a huge percentage of the population (including me, or maybe you the reader). Or headaches.. did you know 45 million Americans suffer from headaches?
What has me so very frustrated is how my request to change rooms was handled. I was treated like I was at fault for requesting a standard most people have when exchanging money for a place to stay (this part is Clark). I was given 10 minutes to get my things packed. Again this was in between times where I needed to be in lectures for work, I was not galavanting on the beach. If the ad clearly stated, "King bed, large tub, close to beach, and moderate to severe mold odor", I would have saved myself and others a lot of hassle.
In restaurants, and even hospital systems, some kind of compensation for such a gnarly mishap (again, 3 hotel rooms in between trying to be in conferences all day) one would think should take place. Well, I got an amenity fee waived for two nights, which is...
Read moreI booked a last minute trip to Oahu for a couple days and booked this hotel approximately 20 hours before landing in Honolulu.
The hotel is situated on Lewers St, which is near a lot of the new shops and is a short walk away from the beach (10 minutes, depending on your speed). As with everywhere in Waikiki, there's ABC stores nearby for any purchases you may need. It's about a 7 minute walk to the International Marketplace (again, depending on your speed of walking). So location wise, there's no problems that I found.
Hotel wise - We booked a standard room and were put on the penthouse. The room was quite spacious and had a good sized balcony. We were overlooking the Ritz which is still under construction, so there was some noise from approximately 7am - 4pm. The one thing to note that in our room, once we had closed the sliding doors to the lanai, we could hardly hear any construction noise. We didn't run into any issues with loud noises during the evening, either. Perhaps this was due to us being on the top floor (11th) and facing away from Lewers St, so your experience may be different. As mentioned, the room we were in was quite spacious and had everything we needed for our short stay. The bathroom is a bit outdated, but served its purpose. Water pressure wasn't as high as I had wanted, but still was good enough to rinse off all the suntan lotion.
Breakfast is served here and it is what everyone else has mentioned, very basic. They serve coffee (believe decaf, regular coffee, and a vanilla macadamia nut coffee) and your basic breakfast foods - Cereal, fruit (pineapple, melons, banana) and also bagels and toast. Breakfast was served from 7-9am and we were normally there by 730am at the latest so didn't have any issues getting food. Some reviews mentioned if you show up later they run out of bagels, etc. but I can't comment on this.
The pool is also quite basic and small when compared to other hotels. But it's good enough to jump in to cool yourself off and refresh yourself. The area for lounging by the pool is quite small and I'm not sure how much sun it actually receives due to being right under the building and a wall behind a lot of the loungers. But again, the beach isn't far away.
Staff are all friendly and nice and had no issues during our stay whatsoever. For the price we paid, we have no issues with this hotel and would come back to stay here again. Sure it's not a 5 star hotel, but you're also not paying 5 star hotel rates. If you're looking at a place to sleep and relax for a couple hours during the day, then this hotel accommodates...
