I've been getting takeout from this Go! Go! Curry! location for about 5 years, and while this used to be one of my go-to places to grab dinner, that is no longer the case.
I normally get the Grand Slam since it's enough for two meals, and I get two of them, because my sister is a huge fan of Japanese curry, as am I. There's a pork cutlet, a chicken cutlet, two sausages, a tempura shrimp, and a hard-boiled egg, as well as some pickled vegetables. It's super filling and delicious, and I get an additional tub of curry for the next half of the meal when I eat the leftovers. The curry isn't spicy at all, and it's thicker than what you'd expect from a standard curry, more like a roux. It is a perfect mixture of sweetness, saltiness, and unami. I frequently dream about eating it in my sleep, that's just how much I love this dish.
Over my years of patronage, I've watched the price of the Grand Slam go up, to jaw-dropping astronomical prices. When I first bought this meal, it was $14. Now it is 28 dollars. The price has doubled over a short few years, and while I understand that many businesses are forced to raise prices in these current troubled times, twice the amount for less food is just hard to swallow. The containers have gotten smaller and smaller to hide how the portions have shrunk, distracting you with the prettier packaging. They used to come in chunky styrofoam boxes, like you'd expect from a street cart, and now they're in multiple variations of plastic takeout boxes. The consistency and quality has dropped as well, and sometimes, there's less toppings than previously, or the curry is too soupy or salty or bland.
I'm just really disappointed that Go! Go! Curry! has fallen into such a state of decline. I hope it will be able to pick itself off its feet one day and return to the same Go! Go! Curry! I once loved. But for the time being, I'll be looking for other alternatives, and perhaps try cooking some curry myself to satisfy...
Read moreFor a nice and hearty meal, where better to go than Go Go Curry? Even though I live pretty close to here, it took me nearly two months to finally make it a point to finally try this place out. Luckily, I made the right decision, because this place is actually pretty good!
Go! Go! Curry! is right on 38th between 7th and 8th. It's a pretty small location, but there's still a decent amount of seating inside. Luckily, most of the people that come here grab food to go, so I've never had trouble finding a seat. Here at Go Go Curry, you'll find many variations of curry, ranging from pork cutlet to sausage, to chicken cutlets. For roughly $10, you get a load of curry topped over rice and your choice of meat. If you want to stick to the basics, then go with the pork katsu curry. Depending on your hunger, you can choose from a variety of sizes. I tend to stick with the Large size, which costs right around $10 and add in fukujinzuke for an extra $1.
Service here is incredibly fast, which is amazing if you're doing a working lunch. For the techies out there, Go Go Curry does accept LevelUp as a form of payment. Depending on whether or not you use that app, you might actually have a couple free bucks that you can use here. Nothing beats good food than cheaper good food. Go Go Curry is simply amazing. It's cheap, quick, and the food definitely hits the spot. I love me some Japanese curry, and when it's this close to home, it just makes it that...
Read moreWhen you want a quick and affordable curry, this place is what comes to my mind. Inside is rather small, it is just a one room setting with counter seats on one side, and table seating on the other side, and ordering counter at the end. They also have a water tank and refrigerator where you can purchase some drinks or free water right by the counter. It is usually crowded with those who are looking for a quick bite at affordable price.
Menu is pretty simple, basically, just rice, curry sauce, and extra side like chicken katsu, shrimp temupra, sausage, boiled egg, etc. Most of their offerings come with lots of toppings/sides, but the main thing there, "curry and rice" was barely there, which was disappointing. If you are going to the "Curry" eatery, then you are expecting to eat curry. But here, it is more about the toppings, plus a little curry sauce and rice.
And what else? The special red pickles, Fukujinzuke, that always accompany Japanese curry was not there. When we asked about it, we were told that we have to buy them...
So, after the lunch, we were still not satisfied. We were comfortably full, but not full in our hearts, if you know what I mean. Something was missing, and didn't quite get that happy feeling when you finish your meal. Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog,...
