Went in having no idea what to expect but it ended up being really fun. I went with my wife and we were paired with two individuals who were part of our team.
For those who want an idea of what to expect since that is absent from most reviews, I will explain how it goes.
There are 8 teams of four people. All the podiums are lined up in front of a gigantic screen that fills the entire wall. The gameshow host is on an elevated balcony off to the left of the screen.
Each team stands at a small podium which has 4 buttons -- a red button, a green button, a blue button, and a yellow button. Each member of the team is in control of one button for the entire game.
There are various games that include tapping that button as fast as you can, or trivia where you need to be the first person to hit the button to answer the question. But then there are other games where you will have a character on screen for example and you need to work with your team to move that character (the person holding the red button will make the character move to the right. Whoever is holding green makes it move left. The yellow button makes the character go down. The red button makes it go up etc etc). There are a variety of games that require teamwork but other games where you can be on your own (for example if you know the answer to a trivia question, just hit your button and answer the question -- no consulting with your team necessary)
The games are fun, unique, engaging and overall this is a great experience to do something with friends, or for a date night etc.
There is a prize for the winner but the host makes sure to let you know early on that it is a "profoundly dumb" prize. My team came in third so I don't know what the prize was. But this is just something fun to do and it's fun to compete for bragging rights. It's not about the prize.
Perhaps a nice "bonus" if you want to call it that is all the buttons work. Sometimes you go to something like this and you end up with a button that gets stuck, or it doesn't register or whatever. But nobody on any team complained of their button not working properly. Everything worked as it was supposed to.
I was surprised at how late a lot of people showed up. Our reservation was for 7:30 and as someone always early, I arrived about 7:20. But other contestants were showing up at 7:35, 7:40 etc and I didn't know if that would be an issue. We started probably around 7:45 and we were out of there just before 9pm.
For what it's worth my wife and I are in our early 30s. The other participants appeared to also be in their 20s and 30s and everyone seemed to have...
Read moreAs a break during our mission trip with middle and high school students, we spent the afternoon and evening in Midtown. It was a goal of mine to try and find some type of experience that our group could do together. While I contemplated visiting some type of tower or observation deck, like the Empire State Building, I discovered Game of 1,000 Boxes when Googling ideas. Due to the hot temperatures and the desire to find something that would keep our students engaged, this was a great find! It was a bit difficult to find a time and date that fit our group, but I'm so glad that they could get us in. We also had exactly 32 members in our group, which is the exact number of players that can participate in this team game show experience. They also let me organize our teams in advance so I could put an adult on each team and pick what students I wanted on each team. Aside from Game of 1,000 Boxes being a team game show experience, it also proved to be a great team building experience, too.
I asked one of the gentlemen who worked there if they had any other locations. I believe he told me they had or used to have a location in Dallas and were looking into possibly starting a location in London. Because I felt Game of 1,000 Boxes was truly unique and different from anything that I have seen or done before, if one of their higher ups sees this post, as a way to expand and start more locations, I would encourage them to consider applying for Shark Tank.
Finally, if there were two things I wish were different, I would say I wish it was a little less expensive and that there was better signage. When I approached the entrance with our group I didn't see a 'Game of 1,000 Boxes' sign. Then, as I was about to open the door, one of the workers walked right up next to me. Not sure if they don't have signage because they are a newer place or they prefer that they are a more hidden place from the public. Other than these two things, I felt this place lived up to the hype from all the reviews I read. Thank you Game of 1,000 Boxes team...
Read moreOne of the best experiences I have had!! There is a lot going on for the price of only $45 per person. You come into a sort of “secret” building where its lit up with ambient lighting in the front. On the side are racks for you to hang your jackets and belongings if you wish to play without them and the other side a convenient place to sit and wait for the front receptionist to confirm your reservation. This place only opens up at after 3:30 PM so games are based on the hour. You go inside there are about 8 podiums which means you can have up to as many as 8-16 players possibly even more if you choose to do partners and or family games on each set. There is an announcer/narrator behind the left blank wall which will make the game more interactive and much more show like and the projection room you stand in is covered all the ay around so whatever is projected is covering the entire room. The room is also filled with large bass speakers for extra effect. The games last about a full hour with 10 games in total and each having to do with a specific skill like reaction time, trivial knowledge, teamwork and coordination and communication. There are 4 buzzers each with a different color at every podium and each game is specific to how many buzzers are used at a time or what sequence to use such controllers. The game makes you competitive and wanting more as well as learning from your mistakes and moving on. I honestly do recommend checking this place out you wont regret your visit. They also serve a variety of drinks which are of course...
