First the good. The front office staff is friendly. He even walked us to our room so we did not get lost trying to locate it. Once inside, the room was cute....on the surface, which leads me to the bad. First of all we were charged the same rate you would expect to pay at an Embassy Suites or Marriott. During Covidian times I know businesses are just trying to stay open. Therefore, having no amenities such as no breakfast are expected, however I do still expect basics. The room has two beds, and we booked for three people. There were only two towels in the bathroom and no hairdryer. We called the front office (and spoke with someone else) to get another towel and hairdryer. We were told to wait for the delivery. Approximately 10 minutes later, they called back and told us to come to the front to pick up what we needed. Ok....not great service, but no big deal. The bathroom looked decent until you looked beyond the shower door. I suspect this is the same bathtub without upgrades since the hotels conception. There was obvious pink mold and rust. I could sort-of live with this if everything else was OK, but it was not until late at night when we decided to turn in, when we realized what we were really in for. The shower is in operable. The water pressure does not allow for a shower. The water only comes out from the bottom spout. As soon as you try to get the water to come out of the showerhead it trickles down like a stream in danger of a drought. If you turn the cold water on even just a little, the entire shower is freezing. I ended up just using the water from the spout to makeshift a shower experience. Once out of the shower I was looking forward to going to sleep. I pulled back the covers and was horrified! My bed sheets had granules that could only be described as sand or something sand like. When I pulled the covers down further I found hair in multiple locations and stains of God knows what. Eewwwwwww. I had my son inspect his bed and he found a similar situation minus the granules. There were multiple small wads of hair. Needless to say we were mortified. To make matters worse, the pillows were the worst I have ever seen in a hotel. They were lumpy and flat. We decided then and there to pack up and leave even though it was close to 2 AM. I am hoping that the new ownership sees this and makes the necessary changes in order to save this beautiful place. I understand that and tough times some corners need to be cut, but cleanliness and maintenance are non-negotiable. To the owner: Another thing to note is the 14 day cancellation period. How can you have such a policy when you have unstable (bipolar) State leadership? Please get your housekeeping and maintenance staff under control, revisit your policies and lack of amenities. Especially during a âpandemic â cleanliness should be your top priority. The toiletries are a joke and something you would expect at a Motel 6. If you are going to charge Marriott rates, the hotel should at least have something more than basic to offer and most importantly should be clean and functional. Itâs sad when inexperienced management or ownership runs a beautiful place into the ground. Hopefully you can...
Read moreWe were excited to stay at the Gunn House, but sadly, the reality of our stay fell far from our expectations.
Firstly, as my husband is mobility challenged, I asked for a ground floor room ... which we were given, but they failed to tell us that the car park is down quite a few steps, that the pool and breakfast salon are on the 1st floor up very steep and rickety stairs. So, to begin with, for anyone who has issues with stairs, I would not recommend it.
Our room... where do we start.... the door was very stiff to open, and had no security from the inside at all... it had obviously swollen or twisted as each time we opened or closed it, it was a fight to do so. Although the window had curtains and blinds, the door just had nets that didn't black out any light, and the nets fell off at the slightest touch. The edge of the window where the glass meets the wood was covered in a thick film of dirt, and it was old dirt... not just a bit of dust from the previous guest.
The room smelt musty to begin with until we eventually managed to turn the air-conditioning on...to achieve this, you had to stand on a stool... as the unit is so high, you cannot reach the controls. The A/c unit also extremely dusty and filthy, and it looks like the filter has never been cleaned.
The floor of the room isn't flat at all, and the furniture, although picked to look antique, was falling apart, trimmings coming off the upholstery, the marble top coming away from the dresser.
We had 2 queen beds, which came with 2 pillows each and several musty smelling cushions with feathers poking through the fabric. We later spotted when we turned the beds back to go to bed that both sheets were stained, and one had holes in it. By the side of one of the beds, the plug socket was hanging off the wall. The bedside light between us had cobwebs all over the top of the shade. The wardrobe had 1 coat hanger in it, in a twin room.
The bathroom.... the bath had bad rust stains in it, and the shower curtain was extremely mouldy at the bottom. The shower curtain pole it sat on was extremely rusty. The bath taps dripped all night even tho they were tightly closed off. The extractor fan (exhaust fan) didn't work and again looked like it hadn't ever been cleaned. Neither the basin nor bath had plugs. No cups were provided at all. Even the TV remote had been burnt.
Even when I was telling this to the man at check out, he didn't seem to grasp the dirtiness of it... so I demonstrated by doing a dust wipe finger test on the back of the office door.... that resulted in a thick grey mass of old grimy dust on my finger. He was silent and disputed that he'd feed it back to improve future stays.... no good to us when we paid over 100$ for it, and didn't even respond when I said a refund would be better than an apology. So.... NOT recommended at all.....unless you want to stay in a grimy, filthy place.... we left feeling tainted as we've spent the past 5 weeks travelling and staying in various hotels..this was, by far, the...

We had reserved online and when we arrived I got a weird vibe from the desk clerk when I asked to make sure we were able to get a first floor room (which I had messaged about prior), and we were told to use the handicapped parking (even though we do not have a sticker, just a person who can't manage stairs, so we have no business taking a handicap parking spot anywhere). I asked to see the room that we were being assigned prior to being charged but let the guy talk me into charging me for the 2 nights before getting the key.
The handicap parking spot is on the side of the building but there are still at least 2 sets of stairs to get down to the front hallway and back up into a room. Clearly not going to work. I opened the door of the room and it was about 100 degrees inside (hot day, upstairs, don't know if the AC was running or not), and bolted back to the front desk.
Told the clerk there was no way this would work for us and requested they cancel the charge and the reservation. NOPE, not going to do that, I was told. Minimum charge is required for one night - although they had already charged me for 2 nights - and since I booked thru Expedia I would need to call them to discuss.
When I said I hadn't paid through Expedia, that I had paid the hotel directly, I was told no refund and take it up with my bank. Got on support chat with Expedia after we drove down the street to a parking lot and Expedia called and asked them to reverse the charge and cancel the reservation and they refused.
It's not at all like they were full and had given up another customer in order to have us stay there, they still had reservations available when I was on the web looking for somewhere else to stay.
Some people have called it quaint, but really it's more like a run down firetrap that hasn't seen a dime spent on it in years. Putting some rocking chairs on a creaky second floor front porch that has boards at all kinds of angles is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I've read a few other reviews about filthy sheets, bloodstained towels, food left out in the common room in hot weather, and cats all over the place.
We stay in all kinds of hotels and we are totally fine with 2 star hotels, as long as they are clean and the rooms are safe, this isn't one of those places. I also don't leave bad reviews very often, it's not something I want to do, but this was just ridiculous.
The fact that they kept the entire charge for 2 nights, when their own no show policy is one nights charge just proves they are happy to scam for whatever they can get. I walked back around the outside of the building after they refused to refund me, taking a few pics while trying to figure out what I should be doing about...
