We opted for a private lesson which made getting up on the board to catch waves consistently really very easy for both myself and my 11 yr old child. We arrived at the beach according to the detail instructions and excellent communication from Andy and our kits were well prepared, the wetsuits were clean and dry and in excellent condition. The fact that we meet right at the beach makes for an easy start.
Our lesson was taught by Jamie, who spent some time explaining about the longshore currents, riptides and other helpful information that I later realized helped us to maintain our position out along the beach. He then gave us thorough, yet simple instructions on the board before getting in the water to give us the best chance for success. Some of these simple things made a massive difference to what I had tried four or five times previous having not taken a proper lesson.
The arrangement allowed us to keep the boards with us and to come back the next day. Andy even reached out to tell us what beach he would be at so that after we finished our lesson, we could simply drop the gear off to his bus at the parking lot, and not have to haul the gear back to a shop.
It really was a fantastic experience and my child and I are quite confident already at catching waves. Thanks to Jamie for your outstanding teaching and to Andy for your excellent organization and communication. I simply could not give a stronger...
Read moreI signed up for a 3-day surf camp with Andy and highly recommend the camps to anyone who wants to learn how to surf or improve their surfing. You start with a basic rundown of the techniques, but as the lessons go along Andy is paying attention to what you are doing and where you are struggling and makes recommendations that help you become a better surfer. Andy also explains some pretty important theory about how waves work and how to "read the beach" to see where the best waves are and where you should go into the water to minimize the amount of work you have to do to actually get to where you want to be. I also think the surf camp package is a great value for what you receive: ~2 hours lessons/ day (can't remember exactly how long they were) wetsuit, board, and boot rental for the duration of the camp so you can keep surfing on your own time (you get straps to strap the board to your car too). Also the equipment seemed to be new or really well-kept. photos of your last session snacks + refreshments that were really good
Only thing I can recommend to anyone who is going to take lessons with Andy is don't forget to bring some good waterproof sunscreen. My last lesson was on a foggy morning that later turned into a sunny day. I was out on the water surfing for most of the day and got a pretty nasty sunburn.
If you are on the fence, just go for it! Surfing is so much fun and you will...
Read moreMe and my family - my girlfriend, her sons ages (12 and 14), my sons (9 and 6), and my sister all went for an afternoon of surf lessons and surfing with the folks at Wick'd Surf Camps and it was such a terrific experience. Better than we all expected. Andy and his team did an amazing job with all of us...from the time we arrived and got suited up, the lessons on shore, and our time in the water...Andy and the team were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and organized. Their knowledge of the area, the conditions, and the water were tremendous and it resulted in getting our family into the water in optimal conditions (despite the West Coast Rain). Andy and the team at Wick'd Surf Camp put a lot of time in preparing for their customers. It really seemed to me that they did their due diligence in determining which beach would be best for my family to learn how to surf and enjoy the day. The kids haven't stopped talking about their experience and we can't wait to bring them out again soon. We will undoubtedly be reaching out to Wick'd Surf Camp when we get as chance to go back and do some more surfing. I absolutely recommend using...
