Terrible Experience! Strongly recommend you avoid the jewelry counter near the main entrance! Bought my wife a gold and garnet ring form this company at their shop in the Kotva center. It broke the second time she wore it. They reluctantly agreed to repair it, but it would have cost more to ship back to them than to get it fixed, so I asked them to simply send me a replacement for the missing garnet and I would get it repaired myself. After more than two months and seven requests, I have still gotten no response from them. The garnets are of minimal value anyway, and it would cost them probably pennies to make this right, but they have ignored every effort to get a resolution. There are hundreds of other jewelers in Prague, so don't make the same mistake we did!

Update: It's now four months, and still not response from this apparently unscrupulous retailer. ...

Kotva originated between 1970 and 1975, according to the design of the Czech architects Věra Machoninová and Vladimír Machonin. It was built by the Swedish construction company SIAB, which was unusual at the time. The ground plan consists of many hexagons that are interconnected. The department store has five above-ground and the same number of underground floors. When it was officially opened in 1975, it´s sales area was 22,160 m², with 2000 employees serving 75,000 customers a day, so it was the largest department store in former Czechoslovakia.

The Romanesque Church of St. Benedict stood at the places of the department store. A palace for the Prague German Knights of Prague was added to it before the middle of the 13th century, which had a fortress character and was connected with the existing built-in Old Town fortifications. The Strahov Premonstratensians established a Norbertinum college site here in the 17th century and also rebuilt the church in the Baroque style according to Domeniko Orsi's plans, newly consecrated to St. Norbert. The church was demolished at the end of the 18th century due to the construction of the New Town Institute of noblewomen.

Kotva vznikla mezi lety 1970 - 1975 podle návrhu českých architektů manželů Věry Machoninové a Vladimíra Machonina. Postavena byla švédskou stavební společností SIAB, což bylo na tehdejší dobu velmi neobvyklé. Půdorys tvoří mnoho šestihranů, které jsou vzájemně propojené. Obchodní dům má pět nadzemních a stejný počet podzemních pater. Když byla v roce 1975 slavnostně otevřena, činila její prodejní plocha 22 160 m², 2000 zaměstnanců mělo denně obsloužit 75 000 zákazníků, takže byla největším obchodním domem v tehdejším Československu.

Na místě obchodního domu stával románský kostel svatého Benedikta. U něho byla před polovinou 13. století přistavěna komenda pražských německých rytířů, která měla pevnostní charakter a souvisela se současně vybudovaným staroměstským opevněním. Strahovští premonstráti zde v 17. století zřídili vysokoškolský areál Norbertinum a také barokně přebudovali kostel dle plánů Domenika Orsiho, nově zasvěcený sv. Norbertovi.
