Bali Designs — Local services in Pulau Bali

This is one of my favorite shops in Asia, full of gorgeous art in different styles that the owner and his brother make beautifully on both canvas and fabric. Some of it is just fun, some of it is just pretty, and some of it is steeped in culture, paintings of gods and demons from Balinese Hinduism, that the owner will be happy to explain to you (although you might find yourself googling for a deeper understanding). Even in Ubud, locals sometimes stopped me on the street to tell me my shirt was really cool, and lots of people far more stylish than I am have stopped me on the streets of New York and Bangkok and pretty much every other city I’ve been to since.

Once, I asked the owner “you have all these shirts with monkeys, but you’re here on Hanoman Street. Why don’t you have any shirts with Hanuman?” and he painted an amazing, detailed picture of Hanuman from a famous moment in the Ramayana onto a shirt in my size (which I refer to as “fat American,” and he tells me “no, you’ve been losing weight!”). When my favorite shirts from America got holes in them, I got hand-painted replacements here that I ended up liking even more than the originals.

And long after I left Bali, the owner has sent me messages from time to time, just to check in and make sure I’ve been doing ok during covid, or to wish me a happy new year.
