I’ve never written a review for any company or person before. But I feel I owe one to The Urban Edge Hair Salon. Here is a salon where in this lingering Covid time, I feel I can sit in a hairdresser’s chair relaxed and safe. And it is a salon where the staff have brilliantly succeeded in creating so welcoming an ambience. In this beautiful, old historic building in Remuera Road, Newmarket, with its huge ceilings, sash windows, and old-fashioned timber architraves, I can even (often) choose a room for my haircut with sun or shade, breeze or heat, depending on the climate of the day!
At the Urban Edge, there currently works my hairdresser Nan Wang. I have been going to Nan for 13 years. At the time I first went to her in 2007, I had been to hairdressers and barbers for years but had never found any one who could trim my beard consistently well. There was too much inconsistency in quality. The length of hair cut on one side often did not match that cut on the other side. Unsightly tufts of hair stuck out from my chin. Even the cutting of the hair on my head was an issue: there was something “not quite right” about the way the previous professionals did the job. I was looking for someone who would let me walk out of their salon each time with hair and beard cut in perfect symmetry, so I could hold my head up with dignity from one appointment to the next.
Nan, attentive, very caring, an excellent listener, talented, adaptable, and with a naturally sensitive instinct to the needs of her clients, had the deft touch that fulfilled all my hair expectations. When I remember how deft touch means “cleverly skilful, handling things nimbly, neatly and gracefully, especially with the hands”, I can imagine no finer term to describe Nan’s masterly work on my hair. That is why I can proudly say that I have been her client for 13 years.
She always starts off with a vigorous wash and head massage that sets the scene for the magic that lies ahead of me. She then proceeds to cut what remains of my hair: and men with thinning hair are not always the easiest to satisfy! Sometimes I fall asleep during the cut but she never comments on it: just cuts away gently at her sleeping client. When I wake up, I look at a new man in the mirror!
However, going to sleep like that is rare. Usually I am wide awake and keeping a close eye on what goes on while Nan adapts her conversation. She may be quiet as a mouse, or she may chat away like a vibrant budgie, stirring up the air with light laughs and delightful chatter. If I ask her to, she may recite an ancient Chinese poem by Li Bai, responding to her client’s interest in Classical Chinese poetry. Or she will let me tell her amusing stories amid the snip, snip, snip of the scissors.
Then comes the climax of the day when she puts on Comb No. 2 of the clippers and attacks my beard. That’s when the job changes from fantastic to inexpressible. No, moves from inexpressible to amazing-beyond-imagination. The completed job is awesome! She makes my beard fit the contours of my face so well that even people who abhor beards comment with admiration on her work.
I want to thank the Urban Edge Hair Salon for the high quality of service it provides me. It is always a delight to climb the steps of that old house which they have transformed into a hive of hairdressing activity. The other staff are also very friendly to me. They too contribute to the nice feelings of satisfaction when I walk out to take the train for the long journey back to Weymouth.

Read moreYou NEED to change your keratin product or ventilate the salon. I bought a grab one voucher a week prior to reading the reviews of the place.. I did the morning prior to my appointment and was very close to cancelling but thought surely it wouldn’t happen to me. I’m completely put off grab one and this salon after my unfortunate experience.
As soon as the keratin went on, my eyes stung, my nose burned and I coughed on and off the whole time. When asking about it my response was my hair was long and that’s why.
I’ve had keratin several times and never have had this experience, I also have friends in hair dressing and all agree this isn’t normal and something needs to change.
I was EXTREMELY uncomfortable the entire time and had to stand by the door outside while it processed trying to breath. I fanned myself down whilst it was blow dried and not once was I asked if I was ok or if I wanted water in-fact I wasn’t spoken to at all only to be told the basic care for keratin despite me crying from the stinging and coughing on and off.
Please don’t put others through this again. You think one bad review would be enough to change things but there are multiple. I couldn’t wait to get out of there and even being home the smell is still so strong. It’s not normal and you need to change if you care about your clients.
EDITED* As per every complaint this salon rather than just owing and apologising they justify and make excuses, making it the clients fault. I had my eyes shut the ENTIRE time AND a mask on. There was NO option for a formaldehyde free treatment and regardless it’s NEVER that bad. Your “fan” did NOTHING, you need to invest in PROPER ventilation. Your customer service was beyond a joke as there was none and this response from you amongst all of your others is a clear picture of how you care for clients. Will be spreading the word of how awful this place is! They also convinced me to buy their product as no other product would keep the keratin from working and then told me to not buy the next time from grab one but to go to them instead. Money hungry and poor service....
