This is a review of Natelier's pastel de nata masterclass, which is offered at the same location as their Chiado cafe.
We had some trouble booking two people for the class online. After reaching out to the Natelier team, they were very helpful and reserved our second spot for us. The class was held at their store in Chiado, which was very convenient to get to. The class was around 3 hours total; there were around 15 of us total and we were taught by Natelier's owner, Joao Batalha.
The class began with Joao telling us about the origin of Natelier. We then put on our aprons and went into the kitchen, where Joao walked us through making pasteis de nata from scratch including both the pastry and the custard, as well as baking the pastries. At the end of the class we each had three pasteis to try as well as a drink of our choice.
This was a very unique experience. Joao is as gifted a teacher as he is a pastry chef; making laminated pastry is not easy, and Joao was very clear in explaining the steps and diligent in checking that we had performed them correctly and helping us troubleshoot. He also clearly cared that we would be able to take these techniques with us and make pasteis de nata at home. In addition to a written recipe, Joao took the time to explain how to substitute ingredients or alter the techniques we learned for a home kitchen.
The class atmosphere was fun and highly approachable. At the same time, I feel like I learned a valuable skill and gained a deeper appreciation for one of Portugal's special treats. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Lisbon consider...
Read moreHighly recommend the masterclass offered by Nat’elier in making pasteis de nata. I took the class earlier this week: it was great fun - an instructive and an informal introduction to making pasteis. We were taught by the knowledgeable and personable Valeria, who guided us cheerfully and skilfully through each stage of the process. And at the end of the class, each member of the group (having started from scratch) had made a batch of their own delicious pasteis. It was nice chatting with the other “students” in the class and sharing the fun with them as well as getting to know some of the science behind process. Nat’elier is in a very central location, close to the Elevador de Santa Justa and the main shopping district (it’s five minutes walk from Rossio metro station). The shop itself has a bright and welcoming ambience and is well worth a visit even if you’re just popping in to buy pasteis and coffee to go. But if anyone is interested in learning more about making these beautiful tarts in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, then this is definitely the course for you. Thanks Valeria and all the team at Nat’elier for a...
Read moreFinally, a pastel de nata concept store that celebrates what this iconic pastry means to Portugal from both a culinary and cultural perspective. Nat'elier manages to embrace tradition and pay homage to what an authentic 'Portuguese custard tart' ought to be, yet without shying away from innovating and playing around with new flavors (cheesecake, Oreo, apple cinnamon, white chocolate macadamia, tiramisu, and more), including a delightful vegan version of the original tarts. For those following a plant-based diet, or simply avoiding lactose, Nat’elier’s vegan pastel de nata delivers the flavor, texture, and overall experience encapsulated in a traditional pastel de nata. Besides stellar pastries, Nat'elier stands out for its striking decor, super attentive staff, and quality coffee drinks (plant milks and coffee-based cocktails available too!) that match the sweets served here. Eat the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon AND learn how to make them from scratch yourself, joining a Pastel de Nata Masterclass with a professional pastry chef at Nat’elier's very own kitchen - this is, hands down, the COMPLETE pastel de...
