I have used this service numerous times annually over the last 19 years. I visit the area every summer, have taken my wife and both daughters for sightseeing and fishing and Devil's Canyon tours. There is no service anywhere I have ever been that operates with more integrity, honesty and concern for customer service. Steve Mahay is a local legend, and he continually surpasses his reputation. I have personally observed him under difficult to very trying circumstances dealing with weather, maintenance, employees, tackle and his competitors -- he maintined his composure, and acted graciously and fairly in every situation. He treats everyone as if they were family, that's his operating guideline. He is an honorable man and he operates his business with regard to his values above money every time. I cannot imagine what happened to the other reviewer, I have always been given good information regarding fishing, even if the advice was to go have dinner instead. I have been taken to Clear Creek many times, fished with both fly and spinning rigs, been on guided trips and sightseeing trips and have in every instance been treated with respect, courtesy and integrity. There are many fine outfits in Talkeetna, very many qualified guides, and many challenges in the local environs -- your are truly on the edge of the wild here. I consider Mahay's to be the best operation for quality, value, effectiveness...
Read moreWe took the last River/Rail/Trail tour of the year. First is a short train ride from Talkeetna to Curry, the abandoned town about 30 miles north of Talkeetna. The train has a plexiglass top allowing for excellent views and the last actual bathroom before returning to Talkeetna.
Curry is an old railroad stop, formerly having a hotel on site. The hotel burned to the ground in the 1950s and the town was abandoned. Once there, the tour guide shows you around what is left of the town, lets you walk through a couple old trains and explore the local area.
We then took a jet boat ride to the trail portion. Unfortunately the dock at the trail portion was severely damaged the night prior so we could not get off the boat. We did receive a partial refund for this. Of note, the boat will reach speeds of up to 50MPH and you get a large copkie & drink while on board. You also have a chance to see some wildlife on the ride, which is a nice touch. Lastly, the boat is enclosed and has heat.
The workers at both the main building and tour were polite, friendly and knowledgeable. Our tour guide was Holly, who is chalk full of stories, and our Curry guide/boat captain was Cole, also has tons of interesting facts and tidbits. Felt safe on the boat and train.
Highly recommend. Tour group is limited to 20 people and sells out quickly. Also....bring bug...
Read moreMy experience with Mahay’s Jet Boat Adventure, specifically the Devil’s Canyon trip, was nothing short of amazing. From start to finish, the entire adventure was an exhilarating blend of excitement and breathtaking beauty.
The journey up the Susitna River was an unforgettable experience, with stunning scenery that felt like it was straight out of a postcard. The powerful jet boat skillfully navigated the twists and turns of the river, bringing us up close to some of the most spectacular natural landscapes I've ever seen.
One of the highlights of the trip was the knowledgeable guide, who shared fascinating insights about the area’s history, wildlife, and geology. It added an educational element to the fun, making the experience both enriching and entertaining.
The provided lunch was fantastic and much appreciated after the adrenaline-packed ride. It was well-prepared and offered in a scenic spot that allowed us to soak in the surroundings while enjoying a delicious meal.
Overall, I highly recommend Mahay’s Jet Boat Adventure, especially the Devil’s Canyon trip, to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure in Alaska. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just love stunning natural beauty, this trip...
