We bought more than $60.00 worth of smoked salmon packets. Brenda, the cashier who rang the till, started to use her hands to convey the total cost, assuming I did not speak English based on the color of my skin. I was at the time speaking with my wife in English. So why did she need to use her hands to convey the total cost? Obviously, stereotyping and racist attitude. Next to me was another elderly lady who was trying to pay by credit card at the adjoining till, and must have inserted to wrong side into the machine. Brenda taps the lady's credit card where the chip is, and says annoyingly "chip, this is the chip". Rude and impatient attitude.
Also they were supposed to give a free gift bag as per the coupon book, but did not. Near the entrance, we remembered that. Went back and a young cashier said "it is normally $10.00. But reluctantly gave us the bag. So not a fair business practice.

Read moreOne of the larger souvenir shops in Ketchikan. I found the pricing better here as they had a number of sale items that I picked up, including some chocolate bars and smoked salmon. I doubt many of the store items are local or made in Alaska. Most likely, they are made in China, which makes me wary to buy any souvenir products (particularly clothing) from the area that I am visiting. Even the chocolate bars that I bought, which had the name Alaska Candy Company on them, were made in Canada.
