My friend Kaura treated me to Puppet Up. It's an adult comedy show with Muppet Puppets. Don't worry, it's not made up with the Muppets of our youth, believe me, when I say, no one would enjoy that kind of scarring.đ It was with other Muppet Puppets we don't know, thank goodness. It was a FANTASTIC experience! It was funny, irreverent, and a little naughty, and loads of fun. The show takes place in the Jim Hensen Studios in what once was the Charlie Chaplin Studios. These shows only happen twice a year, as The Jim Henson Studio is still a working studio, and therefore closed to the public, except for these shows in July/December. If you go to the site and put in your email, they will let you know when the next one will be. They have a private lot to park, and you must purchase the parking pass ahead of time. There is a small amount of street parking, but I would not count on it unless you arrive very early. There is food and drink for purchase at the event. You may not bring in your own. There is a lot to see, but they do not allow photos or video during the show. After and before is just fine. You sit at assigned seats and an assigned table(s). We were lucky enough to meet Brian Henson, Jim's son. He spoke about growing up a Henson and the Muppets. Kermit was everywhere, all over the place. It was fun to see my favorite Muppets. You don't have to dress up, but lots of folks were dressed up. Whatever you feel comfortable in. Be prepared to go up and down lots of steps if you do the VIP Tour. There wasn't an elevator, just stairs. It was a...
Read moreI went with a friend to see Puppet-Up at the Henson Studios. The host of the show is a good friend of the guy with whom I attended the show, and he and I flew in from Denver to see it. First, the studio is a very cool space, with some interesting history. The property was originally Charlie Chaplin's studio, where most of his groundbreaking films were produced. Later, next to the theater was built the cutting-edge, world-known, A&M Recording Studios, a project lead by Herb Albert. This complex now houses the core of the Henson Puppetry Magic. The show itself is a must see. It is difficult to describe, and I think my attempts at describing it elsewhere have not done it a very good service. I can say this, it is hilariously funny, and you get a rare opportunity to see how the Henson Puppetry magic comes to life. The show is an lightly structured 2+ hours of improvisation, so no two shows are ever entirely alike. It takes cues from the audience and so in many ways it's what we bring to it that shapes it, much more than just a passive observers. There are also re-enactments of some of the truly essential Henson skits from the past, which are still entirely effective and relevant today. Again, trust me, this show is so much better than I could possibly describe. It was well worth the 860 mile journey, and I anticipate...
Read moreThe Jim Henson Company is located on the historic Chaplin lot off La Brea in the middle of Hollywood! If you get an opportunity to visit do not pass it up! This is the where the magic happened and where our favorite childhood memories were created! There is so much to see here - props and puppets from Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Dinosaurs, and so much more. The staff that works there is amazing - you can tell they love their job! You donât have to work in the industry to visit - keep an eye out for their Puppet Up! shows sometimes held on the lot. Puppet Up! is NOT for kids - itâs adult comedy with improv comics /puppeteers who take random audience suggestions and create hysterical comedic puppet sketches. If you manage to snag the extremely limited VIP tickets - youâll get a tour of the lot and meet Brian Henson himself!
