If I could give less stars, I would.
NEVER SHOP AT PAGAN MOUNTAINEERING!!!!!!
DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR BUSINESS. THEY ARE LIARS AND TERRIBLE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY AND ONLY WANT TO TAKE YOUR MONEY!!!
Go to Gearheads instead. They are amazing people and only a minute down the road.
This is why you should NEVER, EVER GO TO PAGAN:
I had an AWFUL EXPERIENCE at PAGAN MOUNTAINEERING. The folks at Pagan REALLY SCREWED ME OVER when selling me the old Indian Creek Guidebook, knowing full well that the new one came out THAT DAY. They had NO signs posted anywhere in the store to make their customers aware of the release. They did not make a single mention to me at the counter even as I continued to inquire in great detail about the Creek as a first timer, solo traveler from out of state.
I went to climb later that day and was made aware by some local folks that PAGAN DID ME WRONG. I went back to Pagan to attempt to right their wrong, hoping they would recognize their fault and do the right thing.
PAGAN REFUSED TO ADMIT FAULT. They pretended they didn't remember selling the book to me just a couple days before. That day I bought the book, tape, replacement ATC, and chalk as we spoke at length about places to go and where to stay and how to navigate the Creek.
They made EVERY EXCUSE IN THE BOOK TO NOT RIGHT THEIR WRONG IN SELLING ME THE BOOK CIRCA 2013: They said the book was worn and that was the reason why they couldn't return it. THE BOOK WAS WORN BECAUSE THEY OPENED IT UP AT THE COUNTER AND LOOKED THROUGH IT WITH ME TO BETTER TALK ABOUT THE AREAS!!! They tried to argue that the old book was just as good. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL LOCAL CLIMBERS AND SEEN MYSELF THAT IS NOT THE FACTS. Hilariously, they were excitedly looking through the new book as I walked in. It is clear in size and content, the new book is much more extensive in terms of information about the area. Not to mention, 100% of the proceeds go to the Access Fund. When I mentioned I would rather put my money towards the Access Fund and support the new book, they LIED AGAIN and tried to convince me the old book was not for profit. Among all their garbage excuses, they said they couldn't send a new climber into the creek without a book and that is why THEY DIDN'T TELL ME THE NEW ONE CAME OUT THAT DAY. They said it wasn't in their shop that day, so they couldn't make mention of it. They could have easily had me take photos of the area map and tell me to come back when the new one was available. BUSINESSES SHOULD BE TRANSPARENT WITH CUSTOMERS AND NOT TRY TO SELL THEM OUT OF DATE MATERIALS IN ORDER TO BENEFIT PERSONALLY IN ATTEMPTS TO CLEAR OUT OLD MATERIAL FOR PROFIT. They said they had posted notifications of the release on social media. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO CHECK SOCIAL MEDIA FOR TRANSPARENCY AND GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! They tried to make excuses saying that refunding the book would cost them their jobs and I was not worth that. WHAT TYPE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THAT??? Also, this is a COMPLETELY FAULTY CLAIM. As someone who has worked in a gear store in a premier climbing destination, I know this to be UNTRUE. They denied the refund/exchange with supplemental payment for the new book and demanded that I leave their store so they could "help out the paying customers behind me." Only two days previous, I had spent $78.40 there.
After dealing with the TERRIBLE HUMANS AT PAGAN MOUNTAINEERING...
I went to speak to the highly recommended and amazing staff at Gearheads. They not only listened at length to my TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT PAGAN MOUNTAINEERING, but truly helped out a new climber to the area. They did what the people at PAGAN REFUSED TO DO. They allowed me to pay the difference for the new book and sent me on my way. Not only are they better people who actually care about the community, they have so much more outdoor equipment, both soft and hard goods, compared to Pagan.
I am grateful for the fine folks over at Gearheads and I will solely give them my business every time I am in Moab.
NEVER SHOP AT PAGAN...
Read moreMy partner and i took our first vacation together in a year. Our target this time was the tantalizing 208 million year old cliffs of Indian Creek. We stopped off in Moab to partake in some righteous shopping experiences. As this was my partnerâs first time to this area and being very new to climbing, we had some crucial items to tick off our list. Upon being greeted by two very kind women we engaged in conversation with one of them and began diving into this awesome retail experience. My partner suffers from a sensory disorder and has a very hard time with clothing and helmets. Upon engagement our retail guide generated creative solutions, positive dialogue, and encouragement for whatever decisions we decided to make in this space. Her knowledge was vast and demeanor sound. It was almost as though we were taking a bath in competence. This comfort we felt and energy expelled by the staff, generated two very positive sales for my partner and i that will continue to serve us through this trip and beyond.
One week later we returned to seek out our retail savior. To our disappointment our og savior was hard at work with yet another undeserving customer. But, alas another fantastic Pagan was right there to pick up where she left off. He played a cool hand as my partner found us out in a sneak purchase of a fine article of clothing, denying the claim he hid it away in a Chaco box and we continued on with our day.
Though the shop space is not as big as the world wide web, our retail saviors are valiantly working everyday, educating, encouraging, and problem solving all your equipment needs to support your inner most desires. Give them a go and let their competence pass through you, who knows you might be able to bring some back to your own profession if...
Read moreThe workers were pretty unenthusiastic to do their jobs and really didnât know much about the outdoors at all. They were pretty rude too. They also told my daughter not to talk to them which is a weird thing to say to a 4 year old asking your name. Decent selection but you can get better prices at other stores for most of your gear. If you came to Moab and decided, while here, to start being outdoorsy then this is the perfect shop to spend some money and look pretty cool. If you actually came here with any knowledge of the outdoors and a pair of boots then youâre probably better off walking a few hundred feet to a better shop.
Weird experience but most other shops in the area were awesome so that made up for it. If you want to make friends with employees at other stores just mention how weird the employees at Pagan Mountaineering are and youâll all get a good laugh and get to hear more stories. You might even get a free beer somewhere down the road.
All in all itâs the quintessential tourist town shop. For that reason Iâd shop...
