I had an ideal shoulder surgery (arthroscopy rotator cuff repair and decompression of subacromial space with partial acromioplasty plus extensive tenodesis of long tendon of bicep - and I've left a few other words out cuz I don't know what any of it means anyway) with Dr. Anthony three months ago.
My recovery has been simple and pain-free from the minute I got home from the surgery center just about four hours after checking in. Minimal discomfort and soreness but nothing like the painful horror show I was anticipating from stories I've heard from other people. I'm gonna say that I'm a quick healer but I'll also say that Dr. Anthony did an excellent job.
He suggested I get an ice machine to use right after surgery and doing so and keeping it on constantly for the first few days led to no swelling that I was aware of and zero pain. I took pain meds for the first 24 hours then went right to Tylenol for the next few days. Within a week I didn't need any medication at all. Yes, I wore a sling for the first few weeks as told and sleeping with it on was really the only challenge I had but even that was a minor inconvenience. Basic activities were challenging for two or three weeks. Teeth brushing and eating with my non-dominant hand were laughable, I felt like a toddler. But day by day I could do more and more and in no time I was doing all my normal activities if I was cautious and listed to my body went I tried to do too far.
I also went right into physical therapy two weeks after surgery as suggested and have steadily regained my range of motion since. Three months later there are very few things I can't do with the surgery arm and I get a tiny twinge of discomfort that lets me know that it's not ready for certain things yet. But those moments are less and less every day. (Full disclosure: I was doing rigorous physical therapy before surgery so I went in very strong hoping to come out very strong. I highly recommend that).
And so now at three months I can start to slowly build back strength with small weights and Dr. Anthony assures me that I'll regain strength quickly and be back to full workouts very soon. So, I'm a very satisfied patient. Dr. Anthony is a great guy, I've enjoyed every visit we've had and have felt cared for and listened to every step of the way. His positivity is reflected in the staff around him, I couldn't have asked for better care or a better experience and outcome from what could have been a long, frustrating and painful process. It almost makes me want to do it again! ...Almost.
Thanks...
Read moreDr. Shawn G. Anthony, MD, MBA of Mount Sanai is a wonderfully thorough, precise and compassionate doctor. During the initial office visit, I was comfortable discussing my physical limitations and lack of sleep due to chronic pain. I was referred to Dr. Anthony, because of chronic pain in my left hip area. I sought out various treatments for the past two years, physical therapy, cortisone shots and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP). Dr. Anthony was my last hope, he diagnosed the source of the chronic pain on the first visit. Dr. Anthony provided me with choices, so I decided to proceed with elective surgery. I was provided with detailed information by his assistant (Jessica), leading up to the surgery my questions/concerns, were always addressed. In March 2021, Dr. Anthony performed the outpatient surgery at Mount Sinai West. Prior to the surgery, I was nervous, Dr. Anthony stopped by and chatted with me to ensure I was comfortable, I felt like I was in good hands. Post-surgery he checked in on me once more to answer my questions and address my concerns prior to discharge. Post-surgery visits were just as thorough as the pre-op visits. Dr. Anthony used the latest plastic surgery techniques to minimize the appearance of my scar. Dr. Anthony has given me my life back, I am pain free, I have resumed all physical activities and the scar is fading with each passing week. Dr. Anthony is a skilled surgeon, I am lucky to...
Read moreI've been seeing Dr. Anthony for just over a year now due to issues in both shoulders. Arthritis in the AC Joints, torn labrum on each side, possible rotator cuff tears.
First, he put me through PT to try a non-surgical option, and it did help for a while but was not enough for my injuries. He was able to give me shots to help with the pain until I was ready for my first surgery.
The surgery had a potential of having a tough recovery for the possible rotator cuff tear and possible bicep tendonesis. During surgery Dr. Anthony realized neither of those were necessary, and the outlook on my recovery drastically changed. I am now 3 weeks post surgery, only used a sling for 3 days, and have the vast majority of my mobility back even though there is still a good amount of physical therapy until I'm 100%. Either way, I already feel better than pre-surgery and can't tell you what a relief this recovery has been.
During my post-op exam, Dr. Anthony was genuinely excited with how well I was doing, and it was really reassuring to see that. He has been communicative, helpful, detailed during the whole process, and he's just a nice person and easy to deal with.
I highly recommend going to his office, and I'm already moving the date up of surgery on my other shoulder since this process was so much easier...
