Russian Hill Bookstore — Local services in San Francisco

Generally in today’s online world you want to support your local bookstore. That was my thought in walking in Russian Hill books twice over the last three months.

I’m sorry to report that I’ve found the customer service to be generally unhelpful.

The first time was around a lack of communication about pre-ordering a new book release. I was given imprecise information on when the new book shipment about was arriving, causing me to visit the store two extra times than needed. When I finally arrived for the third time, I was told I was lucky to get the last copy. It was not previously explained to me that reserving books over the phone was an option, despite my multiple discussions with the clerk on shipment dates.

The second time concerned a gift of socks I’d hope to return without a receipt. My mom had bought the socks a week prior and I had hoped to swap them for a new book. I was told all sales were final.

I live 10 minutes walking from the store. I will go to City Lights...

What can I say about Russian Hill Bookstore that hasn’t already been said? I’ve been to many bookstores in SF and naturally I love them all because, hello, books. But RHB is something special. The staff are SO KIND, the gift area up front is full of cute stuff, the greeting cards are plentiful and is my go-to for card-worthy-occasions, the children’s section is adorable and although I’m an adult you can bet I’ve bought a Jellycat plushie for myself. They even have a horror section which, ugh, fills my heart ever so. For me that’s the mark of a good bookstore, but I am creepily biased. Also I LOVE that they started carrying minis in the store!!! The ladies at the store asked that I update them since it was such a unique request. I forgot to get your contact info so a review will suffice. My partner loved the books you recommended and was familiar with and had been very planning to read works from both authors. My request was very specific (a gift for my partner with a specialized interest in Soviet Union history, more specifically at the intersection of Jewish history there in) and the shop keepers were knowledgeable and well informed with recommendations which he loved.
