Lone Star Guns Gallery & Gear — Local services in Weatherford

I have been going to Lone Star since they opened, and continue to stop by anytime I am in Weatherford and have time to do so. If you are in a hurry, the bottom line is its an above average place and I like it. However to write an honest review I do have to admit there are things they could do better.

The good: Brand new, very well ventilated, indoor range, the ROs do not breathe down your neck or ride people about every little thing. LSG is probably the best indoor range I know if in the area in that regard. You can shoot rifles, pistols, and shotguns. I can think of maybe one indoor range in DFW that even comes close.

The staff is helpful and friendly and generally pretty talkative if you are. If you are not, prepare to be treated the same way in return.

The gunsmith is a great guy. Not every job I have had done there is sunshine and rainbows but he has always been polite, discounted the work when necessary, and in general done right by me.

The prices are pretty average for a gun store for guns and ammo. No complaints, I have seen much worse.

The bad: FFL Transfer fees are something like $40 or $50. Thats insane, and they lost all of my business to Shoot Smart on that one. I have a lot of transfers done, if they had more reasonable transfer fees they would have probably made a lot of money off me. Maybe charging ~$20 isn't worth it for the average customer, I'm not sure. It seems like bad business to charge so much just to encourage in store sales though. An extra $25 adds up over 15 or 20 transfers.

I have never had a great time when I have had to call in over the phone. Some people in the store are more friendly than others.

No steel core on the range, though normal FMJ seems to be fine.

Check the online calendar before you come in if you want to shoot. Sometimes the range is closed for events and the staff will not remember to tell you...

Don't go here if you are new to shooting.

Stopped here on a long drive going home to Fort Worth a few weeks ago. Overall the place looked nice and clean, seemed to have lots of stuff for sale, so if you really need something you probably can find it here. However the reason for my rating is their customer service. The person I interacted with immediately had a negative attitude, I am a younger guy and perhaps that was the reason, I'm not sure. But all I needed was a bolt catch plunger, the little metal piece that goes into the tiny spring that goes into the lower receiver on an AR 15. I explained to the worker what I was looking for and immediately got a "What? That doesn't exist, there is nothing in there" response, and he acted like he knew all and was condescending. I went along with it and ended up just buying a full lower internal kit, thinking whatever this guy works at a gun store so he must know what he is talking about. Get home with the lower internal kit and low and behold, there is the bolt catch plunger included in the kit, after further instructional guides and videos I see in every one that the piece is used. At the end of the day this isn't a huge deal, however if you are new to shooting I recommend going elsewhere for advice or information when you need to purchase something from them. I was in this store today browsing with my husband. I witnessed an employee walk up to man and his son and accuse them of smelling of marijuana. Not sure why he singled this man and his son out as there where many people in the store. The employee at the time was also holding a rifle in his hands at the time. He wasn’t even behind the counter. After speaking with this man and his son in parking lot we learned the kid was home from college and they were just looking around. I personally never got that feeling from the man and his son. It was just a really weird experience all around. That employee should be terminated immediately for his customer service skills. The way he handled it was all wrong. How would you feel if you were shopping with your child and out of nowhere you were accused of something you were not guilty of.
