Visiting as a medical doctor and father of a son with food allergies, most notably anaphylactic reaction to milk protein, although others such as eggs nuts and seafood as well. We came prepared with translated statements of all allergies to French and the waiter spoke some English and he recommended, after some debate, since he was not entirely sure about the bolognese with regards to milk, the hamburger and fries. We asked several times about the bread in the buns and if it contained milk protein.

Hos colleague, the server, later brings a brioche hamburger with salad under a vinaigrette.

Upon question whether the vinaigrette contains eggs she is visibly annoyed only to later confirm it does indeed contain eggs.

My wife’s suspicion and vigilance made her question the burger buns also, since brioche is typically made with butter (dairy product with milk protein. At this point the son already took a bite of the bread and as suspected they shortly realised and confirmed it had butter in it.

The waiter almost condescending answered our questions on the milk contents of the bread by stating that we all are “having a relaxing morning”. Only to seem a little more hesitant after realising his mistake in serving milk protein to a severely allergic boy.

The fact that they “never had a question about food allergies before” is not adequate explanation for the obvious lack of understanding to serve bread

Albeit stressed and visibly concerned, they did not offer any compensation or complimentary service and charged the full amount for all food that they served containing anaphylaxis inducing allergens despite thorough and translated information.

Apphauled we left and only later could relax when thankfully no severe reaction to the dairy containing bread occurred.

We are only passing through, but this episode needs to reflect somehow onto the capability of the staff and the service of this establishment. And act as a warning to anyone with dietary restrictions to...

Café Novo in Brussels offers a mixed dining experience that balances positives with some drawbacks. While it's not the best place in town, it provides a decent opportunity to sample Belgian gastronomy without breaking the bank. The prices are on the higher side considering the quality, but it's a reasonable option for exploring local cuisine affordably.

The ambiance at Café Novo is a bit of a mixed bag. The interior might not be the cutest, but the terrace offers a pleasant setting, especially during good weather. It's a relaxing spot to enjoy some of Belgium's great beers and take in the atmosphere of the city center.

Service is generally satisfactory, though it can vary depending on the day and time. The staff are friendly enough and provide adequate attention to guests.

Overall, Café Novo is worth a stop if you're exploring the city center and looking for a place to enjoy Belgian dishes and local beers. It's not a place that will necessarily wow you, but it serves its purpose as a decent option for tourists and...

‘Est-ce-qu’on veut boire déjà quelque chose?’

Café Novo offers a satisfying experience for those looking to try traditional Belgian cuisine. We had the opportunity to taste their “Carbonnades”, A flavorful Belgian Flemish Stew. The sauce was rich and added depth to the tender beef. The “Boulettes”, Meatballs in tomato sauce, could have been more flavorful if cooked a bit longer, but they still provided a decent taste. Both dishes came with traditional fries which were quite good. If you are seeking a taste of traditional Belgian fare in a pleasant setting, Café Novo is a suitable choice.
