Rarely do you get into a restaurant that is good on "everything" - ambience, service, staff, presentation, wine and liquor and food. Weinkeller is one such.
Rachelle and Kaleigh who waited my table, made you feel welcomed.
The decor is a revamped brick and wooden beam interior with a small bar area and comfortable seating options.
Kaleigh and Rachelle took the time to go over pretty much the entire 5-course menu and options.
I went with the tomato soup as starter that co.es with a side of crispy cheese crusted with herbs. Rich and dense without feeling heavy due to cream or such. It set the tone for the other items that came after.
Went with the Mediterranean salad with seared shrimp, quinoa with an easy dressing. Not a huge salad fan, but it was good enough that I didn't leave anything behind, which is rare for me.
Appetizer was one of the stars of the entire 5-course. Deep fried goat cheese with roasted garlic - it's "beyond" awesome!!! Crispy on the outside and soft enough inside that the knife isn't really required.
Main course was a fillet mignon that was dabbed in espresso powder all around it and wrapped around with bacon on the side. Comes with starch options / potato and seasonal vegetables - I skipped the potatoes and went with more seasonal vegetables along with a side order of wild mushrooms. This was easily a top 10 steak for me, and probably top 5 within Canada.
Each item was brought out with timely precision that I wasn't waiting long before the difference courses.
Dessert options were great (not listing it), however, I was stuffed and Kaleigh again did the magic by asking if I wanted another fried goat cheese to go instead. Before my brain registered what she had said, my head was already going up and down, nodding I'm agreement.
I'm writing this review sitting in my car, in their parking lot - didn't want to leave this for later and forget some details.
Also available is a 3-course vegan meal.
Also, as FYI, parking is available with access from their patio side (ask for a parking token from the restaurant instead of paying for the same).
Overall, a must visit, a must repeat kinda restaurant. 5 stars on all fronts.
Update, second visit on Canada Day! Table for 3, 2 of which were vegan. Went with the salad and fried goat cheese along with the falafel, fried spicy rice, some vegetables and a side salad, presented beautifully. Falafels were about 1.5 times larger than the middle Eastern restaurants I've visited and has a great crunchy / crispy outer. The party enjoyed this but next came the dessert options. Went with chocolate filled fried wontons, bwith a berry reduction and a semi-feozen cayenne pepper / dark chocolate mousse. This is on par with the fried goat cheese - outstanding. I went with the meat option and took the 8" steak with red peppercorn sauce. Unfortunately, my palette still remembers the amazing filet mignon from few days back and while this was good, I'd still go with the filet mignon. Rachelle waited our table and didn't do better than the previous time, as she was already amazing!!! But kudos to the entire team - at least 4 others stopped by on and off along with Rachelle to check how wee were doing. My impressions on Weinkeller keeps getting better with each visit. Thankfully, I live in the GTA, so my wallet can rest for a while, but my taste buds might force me to drive back sooner than the...
Read moreI wanted somewhere special to take my wife for Mothers Day and literally over the past few years we have been so disappointed by so many restaurants. It just seems that as people demand cheap more and more with less and less concern about quality, cookie cutter corporations are taking that measure to an extreme. Bad service, bad food that just doesn't cut it, and a total lack of appreciation for your business. I'm talking places like the Keg, that were maybe good 20 years ago but have literally gone totally down hill. But still want to charge a good buck.
Our experience completely changed today when we set a reservation at Weinkeller. We were greeted by Dan who had all the patience in the world to explain how things worked on the menu, and all of the menu items in depth. From the wine, to the appetizers, main course and dessert we we blown away. The cook on everything was absolutely perfect, the flavors were incredible, and for the first time in years both my wife and me completed every last bit of it and thoroughly enjoyed it all
We drove down from Oshawa, and could only wish that there was anything even close to this restaurant, the experience, the atmosphere and service and the food, were all 10 out of 10.
Anyone complaining about the expense here is completely out of touch. We had starters, appetizers, mains, desserts and drinks and this all worked out to about 100 per plate, and the portions are very fair, so if you want to complain about that, I'd suggest this is not the place for you, go to the Keg and get disappointed yet again, or maybe you don't get disappointed by that type of food because you haven't had better. Weinkeller is beyond better.
This is a dining experience that I'd recommend to anyone, a hidden gem that's still trying to do it all right and hasn't gotten sucked up in corporate greed where the experience is cookie cutter.
This will be our new destination for any occasion moving forward. Thanks folks for making me believe that there are actually good restaurants still trying to do it right!!
We walked away very...
Read moreI have a lot of info but I’ll try to shorten it. It’s a minimum $85 pre fixed menu. It’s a very small venue, may have been 30-35 people in it when we came.
Made a reservation, was seated immediately, however we weren’t approached by wait staff for 10 mins after being seated. There was a very loud and rowdy group that had been drinking so much someone actually fell off their chair and made a Big Bang while they were all howling. I don’t mind this type of crowd but I’m more used to this at my local pub not a small $100 dinner venue.
The servers were very friendly but almost absent which is odd for such a small restaurant. 45 minutes with an empty water glass so we eventually just asked them for a refill ourselves since they didn’t both to offer.
There were no spare plates on the table so in between courses I had to rest my knife and fork on the table because my napkin was on my lap.
Oysters were okay, not very cold more room temperature and 1 of them was ripped up I guess from when they tried to shuck it.
Mussels were very nice and the broth with the fries went well together.
The charcuterie was well done and had a nice mix of options.
The wine we had were Cab Frank and Cab Sauve, both chilled which I found odd initially for a red but they were both delicious.
For mains we both had steak, I had fillet for an additional $15 and my gf had the strip. The cooks on the steaks were spot on and all the extras were done very nicely.
We had to take the dessert to go and were told the cheesecake is the only one that could travel. Honestly I’m not sure what to make of it, 2” piece of cheesecake with some compote. Considering this was 1/5 selections we were able to make for our dinner it felt like a waste.
Overall mixed experience, service was poor but friendly. Environment was nice besides the disruptive crowd. The food was done very well besides a couple missteps. Honestly we were left wanting more but not disappointed...
