In a city that's quickly grown to have a competitive and lively mix of south Asian restaurants, Oshawa now has many options that take us from South to North Indian, Sri Lankan, and Punjabi cuisine and everything in between. We have Delhi street food served on Simcoe St. North, momos can be had downtown, dosa on King Street, and and now we have Northern India cuisine at Dhaba NH 1. Located off King Street at number 8 Midtown Drive, tucked away in an unassuming location near Midtown Mall, Dhaba NH1 offers delicious Indian cuisine that's a cut above the rest. I'm a food snob who's had his fill of butter chicken, kormas, and tikka masala and I had no idea what to expect when I called in a small order to Dhaba NH1, but the first taste brought home the fact that there's something special happening in the kitchen of this small establishment. We skipped the extensive vegetarian menu and opted for the chicken lababdar and karahi chicken. The chicken lababdar was astonishing: filled with complex flavours and depth, there was a richness to this dish that went well beyond the average butter chicken dish. It could be described as a flavour bomb with subtle fragrance and buttery deliciousness. The chicken itself was moist and cooked to perfection but the star was the sauce. It was composed of a complex palate of spices, and to say it was flavourful and loaded with umami would be an understatement. The Karahi chicken -- presumably wok-prepared and mildly spicy -- was made with equal care and attention to detail, with wonderfully luxurious, mouth-filling flavours. That said, the lababdar in particular was a unique sauce that stands out from the typical offerings of butter chicken. In a city now-crowded with south Asian restaurants, Dhaba NH1's chef obviously has plenty of talent and their offerings must be tasted to be believed. After this experience I'm heading back to try their other offerings, vegetarian and meat. I'll follow talent anytime, and there's plenty of talent at the stove of NH1.

I ordered honey Chilli potatoes fry for dine-in and at first they looked amazing but after having some, - oh my my, they were extremely hard to chew. Literally, i had a bite or two and told them about how difficult it is for me to chew on the spot and. then the staff working there told me “yeah because they are made of corn starch and then we fry them that’s why” i mean?! I am aware of how the chilli potatoes are made but I don’t think the corn starch will have that extreme effect. They are supposed to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and not TOUGH!!! i even offered them to have a taste so thag they can check themselves. Anyhow, They replaced it and since i wanted that to be take-out as I didn’t have time to dine in anymore. But to my surprise when it checked it later on they were still the same. I am not sure if they had put the same thing they gave me before, But let’s just say I did not had a very pleasant experience there. And also, they didn’t have a washroom for the customers ? When I asked they told me “ because it clogs every time you flush it” - so why don’t you get it fixed ?

This take-out friendly yet dining available restaurant tucked in the corner of a street is a true hidden gem in Oshawa. We decided to give this a shot in search of tawa rotis, aka chapati, and yes... it was worth finding then. The portions of the food were good value given the high quality ingredients and very very authentic flavors. The staff was very friendly, informative, and humbled in their explanation and recommendations of menu items. We tried their vegetarian thali with 4 good-sized chapatis. *owner confirmed they are launching naans etc starting next month which may be a good decision as it will only bring them more exposure...wish them very well and huge success for future

The restaurant offers a small menu, and I tried a variety of dishes, each leaving a lasting impression.

Palak Chicken: The Palak Chicken was a true standout. The tender chicken pieces were perfectly cooked and the creamy spinach-based gravy was both rich and flavorful. It was a wonderful fusion of spices and greens. Dal Makhni: The Dal Makhni was creamy, buttery, and had the right balance of spices. It was a comforting and classic choice that lived up to expectations. Biryani: The Biryani was fragrant and aromatic, with well-cooked rice and tender pieces of meat. The spices were harmoniously blended, making it a memorable dish. Mushroom Tikka: The Mushroom Tikka was a delightful vegetarian option. The marinated mushrooms were grilled to perfection, and the smoky flavor made it a delightful appetizer. Malai Chaap: The Malai Chaap was a rich, creamy, and indulgent dish. The chaap was marinated beautifully, and the creamy sauce was a treat for the taste buds. Karahi Chaap Masala: The Karahi Chaap Masala was nice and tender soya chaap pieces were cooked in a flavorful tomato-based masala with aromatic spices.

The service was attentive. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and offered helpful suggestions.

In conclusion, Dhaba NH1offers a range of delectable dishes that cater to different palates. Whether you’re a vegetarian or a meat lover, there’s something here for everyone. I would highly recommend trying the Palak Chicken and Biryani – they were the highlights of my food experience. I look forward to returning to savor more of their...
