I had a deeply disappointing experience at this restaurant AMALIE. I arrived around 2pm, and the whole atmosphere already felt off — I could hear loud chatting and laughter coming from the kitchen the entire time, as if the staff had already mentally checked out for the day. The service was acceptable yet with no real effort to make customers feel welcome. When asked how a herring dish will be prepared, the wai
Both dishes I ordered were extremely underwhelming and felt carelessly prepared. The so-called “fried tenderloin” was especially terrible. When I raised my concerns about the texture and quality, the waiter simply told me it was “pan-fried” — but that explanation didn’t justify how dry, tough, and lifeless the pork was. It honestly tasted like it had been sitting around from the day before. No tenderness, no flavor, no effort.
What shocked me even more was the response I got when I asked about a cold appetizer dish made with flying fish. I asked how it was prepared, and the server told me he didn’t know and had to ask the kitchen. When he came back, he simply said, “We don’t know how it’s made.” I was honestly stunned — how can a restaurant not know how its own dishes are prepared?
For a place that is Michelin-recommended, this level of professionalism — or rather, lack thereof — is truly unacceptable. I left feeling disappointed, disrespected, and genuinely surprised that such a place would receive any kind of...

In a beautiful old building, with impeccable service, this really felt like a 5-star experience. We had the famous Danish open sandwiches, and can honestly say several of the dishes fell into the 'best ever' category - I had the best fried fish I've ever had in my life, my husband's herring was the best he'd ever had and every aspect of the meal was superlative.
If you want to be made to feel like a prince/princess, eating typical Danish traditional cuisine, then this is the restaurant for you. Also in a stunning location near Nyhavn and Amelienborg.
A note to try the home-made rye crackers, which (sadly - I asked) you can't buy to take away, as they are home-made for the restaurant only - the best crackers I've ever eaten in my life.
Thank you to all there for a wonderful meal - sorry it took me a few months to get round to writing this review! Worth noting that, like many traditional Danish restaurants, it is not open in the evenings. So do make sure you make time for a special lunch at this wonderful restaurant. Pricewise, it is fairly standard for Danish restaurants - tastewise it is...
Read moreAfter watching the Changing of the Guard just steps away, we walked into the restaurant and found ourselves wrapped in one of the most memorable culinary experiences of our lives.
The decor felt like stepping into someone's home—warm, lived-in, and steeped in Danish tradition. The staff greeted us with genuine kindness and attentiveness, and even those in the kitchen seemed to meet our eyes with a silent, smiling “welcome home.”
And the food… the food was stunning. I had the tartar—expertly seared around the edges, meltingly tender within. The accompaniments were thoughtful, perfectly matched to elevate the dish without overwhelming it. The horseradish, in particular, was presented with an understanding of both taste and ritual—sharp, clean, and respectful of the entire plate. Every element felt chosen with care.
Beautifully plated and even more beautifully prepared, it was a celebration of Danish culinary heritage that I will never forget. This restaurant doesn’t just serve meals—it serves memories. I already can’t...
