If you’re looking to try classic traditional smørrebrød in Copenhagen you need to visit Restaurant Schønnemann. The smørrebrød (Open faced sandwiches) are delicious and beautifully presented. We highly recommend trying the four smørrebrød at Restaurant Schønnemann below!
Dill herring. The dill herring is rich and flavorful with a breaded fried egg on top. This is unlike any herring I’ve ever had before! It was so flavorful and even if you’re not a fish lover I promise you’ll enjoy this. Greenland shrimps in a pyramid. Schønnemann’s uses high quality shrimp from Greenland. This was some of the best shrimp I’ve ever had! It also comes with two dipping sauces for the shrimp if you’re looking for extra flavor. Eriwins Potato Sandwich. We loved the fresh potatoes on this smørrebrød that are cooked to perfection. The pea mayonnaise and shrimps on top brought out the flavor The virgin midnight snack. This smørrebrød is outstanding! It has a nice Smokey flavor from the potatoes and the crispy bacon on top is delicious. The chicken mayonnaise salad is packed with flavor.
Bonus! It’s not smørrebrød, but we loved their tarlets! These are almost similar to a chicken pot pie, but the dough was so flakey and delicious! They’re very Danish and you definitely need to try at least one!
The service at Schønnemann’s was outstanding. All the waiters were so thoughtful and attentive. The restaurant’s decor is reflective of a traditional Danish restaurant that makes you feel welcomed the moment you step inside. There’s no better place in all of a Denmark for smørrebrød! Read moreIt's possible that we had a simple misunderstanding, but I don't think so. I sought out Schønnemman's on the recommendation of a chef in Stockholm, so I was quite keen to try it.
A couple and I went into the restaurant at the same time, and they caught the attention of the man behind the bar. "A table for two, please," said the young man, and the staff person told him it would be five minutes. The couple agreed, and then inquired about a beer for their wait. The man cheerfully showed them the names of each tap, and the couple made their selections.
I stepped up to the bar when called and said "A table for one please." The same man told me it would be fifteen minutes, and I thought for a moment about whether I could spare the time (I had a train to catch in an hour and a half), and decided I could manage stay. Again, no problem.
But when I asked for a beer (just like the couple ahead of me), the man squinted sarcastically and told me to take my place outside and he would come ask me. Of course, I realize that on paper it sounds like no disrespect—but you really had to see his expression and hear his tone of voice. It was a sniffy response to an innocent request (a request which, mind you, I had seen play out quite differently in front of me not twenty seconds before). I was taken aback. I paused and almost sat down—but instead I strolled onward into the lovely, restaurant-filled vastness that is Copenhagen, and found a lovely...
Read moreRestaurant Schønnemann is truly a treasure in Copenhagen—a family-owned place steeped in tradition and warmth. Visiting one of the city’s oldest restaurants was a highlight of our trip, and it was worth every bit of the anticipation. A heads-up: booking in advance is a must. We reserved a month and a half ahead, and given its limited hours and cosy setting, walk-ins aren’t usually an option. Take a moment to check their website for details, especially if you’re bringing a little one or need specific accommodations. They run a single lunch service from 11:30 am to 2 pm, inviting diners to slow down, relax, and embrace the Danish spirit of “hygge.”
As first-time visitors and foreigners, we felt genuinely welcomed here. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, guiding us through the classic Danish smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and beer options with care and warmth. If you’re new to smørrebrød, it’s a beautifully unique taste of Denmark—but if it’s not quite your thing, it’s worth noting this is their speciality. We loved how every dish reflected the essence of Danish cuisine, with highlights like the traditional pickled herring.
What’s also lovely is their flexibility for vegan and vegetarian diners, making the experience accessible to everyone. Overall, Restaurant Schønnemann is a place to fully enjoy the present moment, from the flavours to the relaxed pace. It’s a perfect, genuine Danish lunch experience that you won’t...
