The biggest disappointment in Paris

When I go to a craft beer bar — especially one marked yellow on Untappd — I expect some recommendations, maybe a quick rundown of what they have. Instead, the bartender (a girl) just silently pointed at a handwritten menu on the wall with barely any details. So our order ended up being: “One IPA and one sour, please.”

According to Google Maps and Untappd, the bar was supposed to be open until midnight. But at 11 p.m., they just silently dropped the bill and card reader on our table. It didn’t just feel unfriendly — it felt like they wanted us gone. At that point, our tab was already €64. Honestly, we would’ve ordered more, but it seemed like that wouldn’t be welcome.

We happened to be there when they were showing a football match — France vs Croatia — on a big screen. I’m 100% sure the staff noticed we were watching; we were clearly facing the screen and paying attention. And the cherry on top? Both waiters stood right in the middle of the view, completely blocking the screen… during the penalty shootout!

Overall, the beer selection was pretty limited. Most beers on tap had Untappd ratings around 3.5 — not exactly what you'd expect from a good craft beer spot.

And about the service: definitely not what you'd expect at a place like this.

Honestly, I don’t understand how this bar even got Untappd approved. It really...

(In the vein of Stefon from SNL’s Weekend Update) If you’re in need of a beer house full of beer made by other actual brewers and employing rude, feckless staff, then look no further. Paris’ most lackluster beer house is Hall’s Beer Tavern. Located in Le Marais, this should-have-been-forgotten tavern’s waiters will treat you as if you forgot to wear pink on Wednesday—“You can’t sit with us!” When you walk in, hope you’ve found a not-too-sticky seat where you won’t be ignored. (For guaranteed success, try situating your chair in the middle of the doorway.) Dine on acceptable pub food served not only without a smile, but also without eye contact, and dropped on your table as if in an attempt to convince you the plate might actually be hot. (Hint: It isn’t.) So, if you happen to be standing in front of Halls’ Beer Tavern, desperately need a beer, and literally can’t take another step—or if you just like wasting time watching everyone but you be served—I think you’ve just...

Stopped in with my wife in mid-afternoon between a morning of sightseeing and an evening of jazz. Playlist is classic rock bangers. Creedence (LAPD still looking for those tapes), Zeppelin, Dire Straits, Stones, etc… Impressive tap list and outrageously helpful bartender whose English was more than good enough to be making jokes with us, including laughing at my wife for starting with “just a small” Delerium Tremens (on tap!!!) after her 3rd (4th?) glass of wine. 4 rounds in we say we have jazz booked for the evening. Next thing I notice, some Brubeck is playing and I look up, and the bartender goes “for you!” We are beside ourselves. We will recommend this place to every single friend who comes to Paris.

Great place and friendly staff. Went in around lunchtime, plenty of space to sit. The bartender recommended me a good New England IPA which was very fresh. Had the tartare which was phenomenal - in taste and also size of portion. The place also looks nice and great playlist as well. Definitely recommend heading there for a pint and food!

A very pleasant place to visit. The bartender was pleasant and their craft beers were limited to bottles but otherwise it was a good experience for someone just getting a small taste of the Parisian craft beer scene.
