Xiao Long Kan is a great restaurant, especially for families or for dining out with friends or colleagues. I have already dined with colleagues in the sister restaurant in Berlin - the Düsseldorf dependance is as agreeable! Spacey and with interior design that shows love for detail, the restaurant takes you unto a journey East. Professional and super friendly staff, and immaculate clean tables. The tables in the alcoves seat 4 people, whereas the open tables seat up to 8 comfortably. Food is exceptionally well served. Quality is very good. Use of the iPad for ordering initial dishes is easy, yet staff helps out, if you are in need of explanation or of spoons/forks for children. We had three non-spicey sauces as we brought our small children. But you can spice things up with extra sauces at the buffet. My favorite is the seafood sauce with koreander and grounded nuts. Noodles, rice, beef rolls, crab meat, mushrooms, meat balls - we all loved it. Tipp: Try the frozen tofu instead of the regular tofu. And next time, I would rather order some more fancy dishes. And not order all at once, but rather take turns, try things, and if you are lucky, a robot waiter will come to your place.... Service came by regularily to fill up the hot pot with boiling water. Upstairs is some private seating area (these might come in handy, if you prefer some more privacy) and the bathrooms. Reservation highly recommended. Currently, only via phone. We have been lucky on a Saturday afternoon to grab a spot for 1.5h from 4pm with just an hour notice. Usually well air-conditioned, on this day rather chilly as there was a technical glitch. But the waitress readily helped us out and seated us at a table a bit warmer. All in all we paid 99€ for the 4 of us. Not extremely cheap, but I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, it really was a 2 hour trip to...
Read moreI tried the one in Frankfurt, it was amazing. So I had high expectations when it comes to Düsseldorf. But reality sucks.
The store is well decorated and relatively clean. First impression was really good getting into the restaurant, very busy, good atmosphere, the decent smell of the spicy broith.
The meat was fine, you probably could get meat of same quality for a bot cheaper in competitor but overall fare pricing. We ordered two portions of beef and one portion of beef tongue. Lamb meat is very average, like a Asian market frozen zone quality, but it's not pricing crazy so I would say it's okay.
We order one portion of fish slices and two portions of shrimp balls, my advice...STAY AWAY FROM THE SEAFOOD...
The fish meat is very loose, 100% not fresh, just normal frozen pangasus filet, not expecting to get this quality for the price. It's gonna be a big Hassel fishing it out after boiling since it's very loose and very easily broken.
Shrimp balls are just nightmare, it's normally my favorite but we are not even able to finish one portion. It is really fishy, I don't even know where the fishy taste suppose to come from... the taste was so bad even the spicy broith cannot cover up the bad taste. In the end the two portions were sent back and fully refunded.
My stomach started feeling funny after eating the shrimp ball and had some stomachache in the following day....
The total bill for three people is 160 euros, to be honest a fair price if everything is well. But paying this bill and having such a hassle later the night and the next day...
If you decided to go, maybe stay on the safe side and have the meat, stay away from the seafood. I learned it...
Read moreA great place to experience a Hot Pot. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant. You have the choice of up to three different "soups" that are placed on a boiling plate in a center opening in the table. Then you can order all kinds of vegetables, mushrooms, fish or meat and throw it into these "soups" for a few minutes and then take it out and eat it with rice and a series of dips that can be fetched from a nearby bar. The three "soups" are a delicious tomato soup, a super spicy chili-kardamon soup and a mild European broth based on either mushrooms or meat. It may not sound like much, but this is all super delicious and everyone can prepare and eat what they like. The steaming pot in the middle is quite cozy and the interior decoration of the restaurant fits perfectly. This place reminds me of a great delicious Mongolian Hotpot experience that I had many years ago in Shanghai. Give it a try if you like to taste something new. And if you like spicy, you will not be disappointed by the third "soup".
The only downside: it isn't cheap and one usually orders more than one can eat. But you can take the rests home and then enjoy these again the next day.
They also offer desserts, but we never were able to test them since we always left more...
