Upon arrival, La Casa del Ron appears to be a highend establishment, offering the customer an opportunity to sample exquisite rums.
What we actually found out, is that it is an pretentious bar, selling expensive rum tasters and cocktails which flattered to impress for the price.
After looking forward to this experience for quite a while, we were left even more disappointed when we were informed that the kitchen was closed and that we would not be able to same the cheese selection.
Wanting to share a tasting selection with my partner before deciding which rum we would like to drink after, the experience was ruined when we asked our waiter if it would be at least possible to have an addition chocolate rather than attempting to share one mini sample between two. We were informed that we could, but for an additional 10q.
At that moment, the trip was experience was ruined. It seems the company has no interest in pleasing it's clientele.
To make matters worse, the outdoor seating area stank of sewage.
Avoid with a barge pole!
You'd be better off buying a bottle of rum from a local tienda and sitting outside on the street corner for a more...
Read moreOne of the highlights of Antigua! If you are someone who even remotely enjoys rum then Casa del Ron is a must visit. Ron Zacapa is the best rum in the world and casa del ron makes a worthy shrine. Pretty upscale and hence more expensive than a lot of other places in Antigua but its worth every penny without a doubt. The interiors are slick with striking displays of Zacapa and Botran rums. A nice little outdoor patio like most places have in Antigua in case you prefer outside seating. The menu has some phenomenal rum based cocktails (they have a mean zacapa old fashioned) in addition to a rum sampler which I highly recommend. One of the very friendly and knowledgeable staff lead you through the 20-25 minute tasting and explain the flavor profiles and processing of the different varieties of rum. They also have bottles of rums for purchase at regular price, not marked up like fancy places usually do. Loved the experience here so much that made sure to stop by multiple times. Their small plates were pretty delicious as well. Definitely a must visit...
Read moreI am a big fan of Ron Zacapa and was looking forward to enjoy it in one of their "flagship locations". However, I never had such a bad experience in a high priced establishment. We went on a Monday, and they said the kitchen would be closed and we could only order drinks. None of this is mentioned on their website. When we went ahead with ordering the "Cata de Ron", the waiter mentioned that he couldn't do the full experience because he is on his own. Because it was the last day in town and we really wanted to try the rums we did it anyway. When the waiter brought us the Cata, he at least briefly mentioned what was the difference between the rums. Friends of us shared a Cata and asked if they could at least have a second chocolate since the kitchen was closed: Yes of course, if you pay an extra 10Q... Sitting in the outside patio, you will also get a nice whiff of drainage with your rum. Do yourself a favor and try the rums in a different bar, it's a shame that they are not able to give you a nice experience in on of their...
