“Terrible Experience, Rude Management, and Dishonest Practices” China-Town Restaurant, Népszínház u. 15, 1081 Hungary
I had a very disappointing experience at China-Town Restaurant in Budapest. As a tourist, I expected better hospitality, but instead, I encountered rude management, misleading practices, and a lack of menu transparency, which is against Hungarian restaurant regulations.
I ordered fried noodles with vegetables, but was served noodles with chicken and eggs, ingredients that were not listed on the menu. According to Hungarian consumer protection laws, restaurants must clearly state all ingredients in their menu, especially for dishes that may contain allergens or specific dietary ingredients like meat or eggs. However, this restaurant failed to follow such basic standards.
When I pointed out the issue and asked for a replacement, the manager was extremely rude and argumentative. Instead of apologizing for the mistake, he insisted this was “how it is in Hungary” and blamed me for the confusion. His behavior was completely unprofessional, showing a total lack of respect for customers. After finally agreeing to change the order, he charged me for both dishes, even though one was a mistake made by the restaurant!
When I rightfully refused to pay for the dish I didn’t order, the manager escalated the situation further, threatening to call the police and trying to intimidate me as a tourist. I was shocked and uncomfortable, as this level of hostility and dishonesty is unacceptable anywhere, let alone in a professional setting.
Overall, this restaurant doesn’t care about its customers or basic standards of service. The manager clearly lacks the ability to treat customers with respect, and the restaurant’s practices violate basic consumer protection rules in Hungary.
To anyone considering dining here, beware of their dishonest pricing and disrespectful behavior. There are plenty of better options in Budapest that actually respect their customers and...
Read moreThe middle-aged female shop manager was obviously under-qualified with arrogant and vitriolic attitude. For her reason only I rate here one star.
I entered this restaurant myself and this woman showed contemptuous facial expression and arranged me a four-people seat at the corner(they don't have single table there). It's dark, facing a wall, actually the worst seat in the shop. I kindly asked her can I sit at another place cuz the shop was half-empty at that time.
She agreed reluctantly. While I was ordering she mentioned a second time to let me change a seat, this time she told me sorry I forgot it's reserved already(obviously it's a lie cuz there are no signs on the table and there are lots of tables there). I told her before they come, I will finish mine. She said OK, fine again.
Finally, when I ordered one portion of noodles she got hysterical immediately, seemed very unhappy cuz I just ordered not much. She used the table thing as an excuse and asked me unrespectfully to change to the seat she required.
I got angry too. And I told her it's your fault to forget the reseravation thing(whether it's true or not), and I sit here with your permission two times. Why should I pay for your responsibility!
She said something and left and didn't serve me anymore. Luckily another young friendly lady came and said sorry to me and asked me to calm down. She felt very sorry.
In conclusion, I think this happened due to this middle-aged woman's unprofessional conduct and discrimination against single customer and low consumption.
I've been to the shop for two years but I am extremely unhappy this time. It's the first time I experienced such bad thing here. Nobody can guarantee that you always eat out with someone else and I strongly protest against discrimination. I ask for official written apology from the shop owner under this comment and promise there would be no more discrimination anymore.
Before that, I don't suggest you to...
Read moreI find it amusing that one of the other reviews from a self-proclaimed “dumpling connoisseur” called the dumplings here horrible because they “weren’t even fried” just boiled and “only served with some vinegar”. This is one of the more homemade ways to prepare Chinese dumplings and actually exactly what I was craving one night. At home, my family just boils it and eats dumplings with black vinegar to keep it simple and sometimes drinks the dumpling soup after too. After reading this review, I knew I had to come here. Unlike more “bougie” western facing pan-asian restaurants (where you’re given a meager amount of 5 dumplings that are fried to extinction), Chinatown Restaurant does it right with a great portion of 10 dumplings simply boiled and served with some white rice vinegar. The twice cooked pork belly here is absolutely phenomenal with very thinly sliced, savory spicy pork and lots of pieces of both green & red pepper and wood ear mushrooms. The amount of pork belly given was very generous. The dry fried green beans are also amazingly crunchy, umami and spicy with lots of dried chilis and...
