The food here is excellent--very high quality takes on traditional Hungarian staples, made in a gourmet way. The atmosphere is quite nice whether you sit inside or out, and the chefs are quite friendly and smily. The wine list is just the right size and the prices of bottles are fair. Unfortunately, the person you interact with most is the waiter, a middle aged man with some problems with his manners. I arrived with a friend for lunch and was promptly seated by the waiter. When he asked if we were having lunch, I said yes and he nodded. We explored the wine menu first and selected a bottle. When he asked what we wanted to eat (we had only had a few minutes to choose the wine) I asked for more time. He immediately snatched the menu out of my hands and said, "this is for lunch only." Rather shocked, my friend and I laughed and reiterated that we were going to order, but we needed a few more moments (they were not crowded at all, I will add). Secondly, the service fees are out of control. I realize this is a problem at many establishments in Budapest currently, but this restaurant is among the worst offenders in terms of all the extra service fees. I'd advise them to hide some of the service fees in the prices of the food, so at least customers will have an idea of what their bill will be before they choose to eat there. Also, hire a waiter with some basic manners! Don't snatch menus out of someone's hand because you...
Read moreEat here! This was one of the best meals I have had, ever! We stayed nearby and happened upon Kispiac Bisztro on an evening stroll. I checked its reviews on Google Maps first. All 5s as far as I could tell, so we went in. How lucky were we! Small and packed with charm. We asked the waitperson what he would prepare for us if we were his Aunties visiting from Chicago. We hinted what we were thinking of, but he suggested the beef goulash, a salad, roast duck with vegetables, bread and I added a variety of pickled veg. The goulash was incredible with a beef and celery-tinged broth, tender bits of beef and vegetables. Not too dense, so we had room for the meal. The generous serving of bread was fresh baked. The crisp salad cleansed our palates. The duck, crisp-skinned, juicy and well cooked sat on top of perfectly timed roasted vegetables next to a shmear of savory red pepper sauce. Yum!!! The side pickle selection added a zip and brought me joy, particularly the cucumber salad part. yum!! We...
Read moreNot only our favourite meal in Budapest, but also our favourite meal across our ten day trip from Prague, through Vienna and Bratislava to Budapest. We turned up around lunch time on the weekend and though the streets were empty, the tiny restaurant was full. The staff did not allow us to book the next free table, and were not super accommodating so we went to nearby hotel for beers and checked for a table prior to each round of drinks. When they finally had room for us the staff were lovely and could not be better. We ordered the pickles, bread and a dumpling soup. While delicious it felt like a slow start. Next was our main meals, the pork knuckle and the stuffed cabbage. The stuffed cabbage was amazing but pork knuckle was next level. Even though we we had a light breakfast many hours prior we did not manage to finish our plates off. The place was very cosy with nice decor, and they seemed very passionate about the food and their restaurant. Would recommend to all and go back to Budapest...
