Would have been 1 star if it wasn’t for the goulash stew meat which was actually quite nice. Ordered a mocktail which was horrible, the “feta cheese” in the Greek salad was not feta cheese, the “fish of the day” was frozen cod, mash potatoes were worse than a canteen - they were clearly powdered mix mash potatoes and the sauce on the fish was strange….no doubt from a packet. I wouldn’t recommend this place

EDIT: The response from the restaurant says it all, this place is a joke 🤣
My reviews on Google Maps are always fair and as in this case, if the meal was poor, then I say so
Okay, the edits
Mocktail is a cocktail without alcohol, seems “Rick” doesn’t know this. The horrible mocktail couldn’t have been improved by adding alcohol as I don’t drink alcohol, hence the reason why I ordered a mocktail
It most definitely wasn’t feta cheese, just because it says feta cheese on the packet from the cheap supermarket where you bought it from “Rick”, doesn’t make it feta cheese. It was soft cheese without the consistency of real feta. “Rick” should try the real feta at the nearby Dionysos Taverna
“Fish of the day” or “soup of the day” etc is a well known way of a restaurant describing the one-off available, or a special or batch made item. In “Rick’s” case it’s always the same fish……from the freezer. At least he confirms what I said, that the fish was frozen. I’ve never ever been served frozen fish before in a restaurant, this just shows what type of place “Rick” is running. The concept of “fish of the day” is that the Head Chef or Restaurant Manager or someone who knows about food goes to the market daily and gets a large quantity of fish of a particular species and that is what is on the menu that day. I suggest “Rick” stops calling it “fish of the day” and just buys better quality frozen fish if that’s what this restaurant wants to offer, or even better, take fish of the menu and focus on goulash
Now “Rick” is telling me that he buys imported Idaho potatoes. Potatoes all the way from Idaho!!! C’mon “Rick”, the mash potatoes you gave me were from a packet powder mix. Maybe a powder mix with the logo “Idaho” on the packet bought from the cheap supermarket where you also buy the “feta cheese” and the frozen fish. There wasn’t fresh potato in the recipe, or butter
I’m laughing at the restaurants reply, really. They are claiming that they add expensive Tojak Hungarian wine to the strange sauce that comes with the cheap frozen fish. Yes “Rick” I believe you 😂. Again it’s a packet mix from the cheap supermarket where you buy all your ingredients from, be honest
In my opinion the restaurant should serve goulash only and forget trying to serve anything else, focus on what they are good at…..goulash
I will never be back to...
Read moreOn my recent trip to Budapest I decided to have dinner at Rick's restaurant and here's how it went.
There was plenty of seating both upstairs and downstairs with a lovely view from the latter. The atmosphere was cosy and rustic. However, I think the restaurant would do good with more decoration. The atmosphere is very child friendly yet also good for a date night.
To start, I got the lobster cream soup with seafood. Although a lovely dish, I couldn't help but think it tasted nothing like Lobster but more like crab. I like the addition of the seafood bits in the soup, but I do think I took away the flavour of the lobster. If you enjoy fish, this is a great started but if you're looking for a strong lobster soup, then I'm afraid you'll have to keep looking.
For the main, I got both the chicken brest fillet and the lamb rib and lamb fillet. To my surprise the when the food was eventually brought out, I was told I had to cook my own meat! Though a unique concept, it lacks practicality. When whatever meat you have is cooked, everything else on the plate has gone cold. For the lamb, I thought it was very under seasoned and lacked flavour. I get they couldn't sous vide the lamb beforehand as that would ruin the whole 'cook it yourself' gimic. I still think it should have had a rub of some sort. For the chicken, I thought it was it was prepped brilliantly so that if you overcooked it or cooked it for too long, it would still be juicy and packed with flavor. Well done rick!
No, for the dreaded part, the price. All in all, I spent a little over 80,000 huf or €100. I think for the quality of the food and the quantity of the great cheap restaurants in the area, this is a rip of that would drive away a lot more customers than you'd expect.
Overall, I did infact have a good dining experience, but this was slightly tarnished by the extortionate price for some lacklustre food. Overall, Rick's restaurant gets a...

They weren’t just helpful; they went above and beyond, offering thoughtful recommendations, patiently explaining the nuances of Hungarian cuisine, and even sharing a bit of history about the dishes. Their generosity and kindness made me feel like a welcomed guest rather than just another customer.
Now, let’s talk about the food—because wow. If you’re looking for authentic Hungarian flavors done to perfection, this is the place. Every dish was bursting with rich, bold flavors, showcasing the best of what Hungarian cuisine has to offer. I got the goulash soup. Outstanding!
Of course, a great meal isn’t complete without great drinks, and Rick’s cocktails were outstanding. The bartenders know their craft well, creating expertly mixed drinks that complement the food beautifully.
Beyond the food and drinks, the atmosphere at Rick’s is warm and inviting, with an elegant yet cozy decor that makes you want to settle in and savor every moment.
