If you’re staying or walking past the Fort Kochi area, then it is impossible to miss this eatery. There are 3 reasons for that.
Kafe D Kochi is an open air restaurant located just 1km from the Fort Kochi beach. The ambience is very chill with some good pop/rock songs adding to the vibe. The best part about this place was the range of items that they offered for both veg and non vegetarians. They not only cover Kerala style food but also international cuisine like Italian.
We tried the mango fish curry and that is something not to miss. We were a bit reluctant initially because we visited in the month of November and weren’t sure about the taste as Mango is a seasonal fruit. But they clarified that they put raw mango in it and we took a very good decision to try it. The tangy flavour of raw mango along with the Kerala spices elevated the dish to the next level. Couple it with rice and you’ll have a cracker of a dish for yourself.
We also tried the veg pizza with some cool minty beverages because of the humid weather.
Nothing to complain about as far as the food is concerned. The only problem was the mosquitoes who were feeding on our legs the whole time, making the dining experience a bit of a struggle (because the restaurant is an open air one).
The portion size of all the dishes can easily serve 1.5 people. We ordered 2 fish gravies for 3 people but if you’re moderately hungry, then 1 portion...
Read moreVisited Kafe D Kochi (part of the Eat Kochi group) with high hopes, but left with a bitter experience. We were recommended a seafood combo for 4 people which included a fish (under 1kg) split and cooked in two styles – one half tawa-fried, the other as pollichathu – along with some butter garlic shrimp and a few pieces of golden fried calamari. It also included 2 small bowls of chicken fried rice with chicken rarely to be found. We were told the price would depend on the fish's weight, and we reasonably expected it to be in the ₹1500–₹2500 range.
To our shock, the final bill for just this combo came to ₹4400! While the food was undeniably tasty and the ambience had potential, nothing about the experience justified this kind of pricing. They don’t even have a washroom for guests – a basic expectation for any dine-in place. Street cats roamed freely under the tables, even scratching our legs trying to snatch leftovers.
Be warned: if you’re ever offered a combo “based on weight,” ask for the exact pricing upfront or risk getting unpleasantly surprised.
A great-tasting meal turned into a disappointing and overpriced outing. Sadly, won’t...
Read moreWe had lunch here when we visited Kochi Fort last week. I am writing this review to alert everyone so that you are aware of the practices followed here. We have seen fish fry in the menu which was costing around 550 and asked the waiter about it and he took me to show the fishes and asked me to choose from them and I chose one fish and he told me that he will fry half of it on tawa and half wrapping in banana leaf. The fish was meaty and good but the fish was not fried much inside though it was burnt outside. He mentioned the name of the fish as Skipper or something. We also ordered couple of chicken biryanis which was costing around 200Rs each. When the bill came we were surprised to see one fish fry being charged for 1900Rs. That's when we felt we were taken for ride. It was probably our mistake to not confirm the price once again as we just went with what's quoted in menu. So be careful and confirm the prices of each item before...
