The best gelato I've had. Bar none.
I don't know how to describe it. Words aren't enough. Interpretive dance lacks enough substance. I can't even scream loud enough to express how good it is.
Instead, I will try to use English. It is a poor form. Wingdings is better. But still.
Anyway. I got a cono piccolo. 2,50€. A steal. The workers there are exceptionally nice and were quick to recommend flavors and give samples. The worker helping me said his favorite was the carmello al burro salto. I love caramel. I couldn't say no. To pair, he gave a list of his other favorites- cherry mania, gelato al riso, crema buontalenti - I went with the riso. Because rice. And because horchata is delicious and anything that can evoke the taste of milk, rice, and cinnamon is good in my book.
Anyway. The cone is handed to me. Little did I know my life would be changed forever. Like the Olympic torch being passed from athlete to athlete, he had given me the torch that would light a fire in my heart. And I was so naive. So innocent. I didn't know how good it could be. Some say ignorance is bliss. But I think, when my tongue first had it's taste buds dazzled by carmello al burro salta gelato, i reached a state of spiritual enlightenment. Not quite Nirvana. No, that would come with the carmello paired with the riso. So, on a 37°C day, there was no time to waste. Spoons were flying. My tongue was lapping. My brain was exploding with flavor. The pairing of riso and carmello was almost too perfect. The cone was gone in moments. Picture a watermelon thrown into the gullet of a hippopotamus.
Never in my life have I finished something and immediately said to myself, out loud, that I need another. NEED another. Got in line. Decided to be brave. Decided to do carmello, and carmello. This time, the worker looked at me. Her eyes said, "oh, my sweet summer child". Little did I know the second carmello is a fudge. She looked at me, in my innocence, and extended a spoon of it instead. The richness blew me away. Instead- I opted for what got me to a place of higher tranquility. Carmello al burro salto and gelato al riso. Delicious. Gone again in moments. Such is the fleeting passage of time and life. Enjoy the sweet things while they last.

Read moreWould not recommend coming here if you have a food allergy as they will not serve you. I told them of my allergy and asked which flavors weren't made with it. They said they don't clean their machine so there could be cross contamination. I told them that wasn't a concern for me, so if they could tell me which ones were not made with it in the base so I could order. They said they did not know because of the machine and that my business wasn't welcome there. It was upsetting and embarrassing. I know my body and what it can handle, and I know this better than them. The person I was speaking with was very smug about this. I don't know if this was just that person or how they are trained to handle food allergies. I have not experienced this in any of the places I've been to before and Florence is generally very accommodating with allergies. This was not a language barrier issue since I speak Italian and communicated with them at first in Italian, before they started speaking in...
